worried about 6yo's lost tooth

hi, my DS1 (6yo) has had wobbly front lower teeth for a wee while - just a tiny bit wobbly.

Last friday him and a mate did tug of war, with a a jumper in DS1's mouth, and his pal pulled it 'really hard' .grr. There was some blood.

the tooth was then incredibly loose and wobbly. think the other tooth more wobbly too. Then yesterday (Wednesday) the tooth came out - but it had a long root - does this mean it came out 'before its time'?? is this bad?? does he need to go the dentist (next appt in May)??
thanks in advance.

was it definitely a baby tooth? Is the adult tooth there in its place now?

hi yes, he def hadn't lost any other teeth before. It doesn't seem to be sore or anything. Can't see new tooth yet.

DS had a classmate help tug one of his out recently, had been hanging by a string for weeks before that.
Bloody, but Seems fine!

ta.I know he's fine, but having worries about the tooth underneath having been damaged, and other teeth pushed out of alignment. Not that I'm paranoid..!

It probably wasn't completely ready to come out, hence the longer root. But it was wobbly, you said? So it was working on it! Grin

Basically, as the adult tooth pushes up to come to the surface, it pushes against the root of the baby (or deciduous) tooth. This causes the root of the baby tooth to resorb, which is why you usually just get left with what you see above the gum line.

I doubt very much that it would have damaged the adult tooth underneath, as it wasn't bashed (which can, but rarely causes problems) & it would be unusual for it to cause alignment issues.

If anything, it would have cause increased trauma to the gum, i.e a little more tearing =more blood, longer to heal. But again, we are talking a tiny possibility!

@ differentnameforthis - thanks! ever since he chipped a tooth as a toddler I've been a bit overly-vigilant about his teeth. Just have to try and make sure he doesn't decide to get any more tooth fairy money before time!
