Ds has a hacking cough which is waking him up at night.

What can I give him? I had some cough mixture from last time but that didn't really do anything.

He is 20 months

Thanks

You can get the tixylix baby type ones which soothe the cough but I have found they don't do a great deal tbh.

Have you tried propping up the head of his cot and some steam to help instead?

ShowOfHands · 08/03/2011 09:59

None of them really.

Steam, olbas oil/vicks, fresh air, propped up cot etc.

SchmGaslighting · 08/03/2011 10:01

We use Delsym, which is only avail in the states I think so we have bought from Ebay in the past.

I think it is ok from 2 years....it has some little bits in it that are slow release cough suppressant.

But don't trust me on the age thing - give it a google and see if it's worth getting in for next time round.

My post is about as helpful as a quarter-cup bra. Sorry.

TragicallyHip · 08/03/2011 10:07

It's the tixylix that I have and doesn't really do anything!

Would steam, vicks etc help a cough tho? I thought that would only be for a cold?

Looks like I will have to deal with the no sleep till it's gone then!

Don't worry SchmGaslighting it's all help!

Thanks Smile

They are all as rubbish as each other. There is no medicinal quality to them as such, they just coat the throat for about 2 minutes and that's it.

When ds has a cough we put a leak proof lidded cup of water in his cot and have told him to have a drink as that seems to work as well as anything else.

bubbleymummy · 08/03/2011 10:36

Manuka honey 10 or 15+. It is antibacterial as well as soothing for the throat. Cough medicines have been shown not to be very effective and I'm not sure any of them are recommended for under 6 yo anymore.

BlueberryPancake · 08/03/2011 17:57

There is basically nothing that you can give a 20 month old. Is it a chesty cough or a tickly cough? My mum used to give me a mixture of water, lemon, honey, and a few drops of olive oil. It didn't taste as bad as it sounds. But that wouldn't work for a chesty cough.
There used to be Medised but I think that it's not for under 6 years old. It used to be for over 2s but that's changed. You could just take him to the pharmacist.

BlueberryPancake · 08/03/2011 18:01

I meant nothing for a chesty cough obviously! There is a medecine with something called guaifenesin which loosens the mucus and makes it easier to cough but again, it's for 6+ .

I'd back up something with honey. Manuka honey is very expensive but it works

TechnoKitten · 08/03/2011 18:48

No cough mixture is recommended for under 6s any more - calpol and/or brufen for a temperature only.

I put a karvol capsule in a bowl of boiling water somewhere near the bed (obviously nowhere in reach!). Raising the head of the mattress with a pillow under it so he's sleeping head up can help too. You can buy karvol vaporisers but a bowl of hot water works just as well.

Furball · 08/03/2011 19:02

second manuka honey, well worth the money (at least £5) worth every penny.

TragicallyHip · 08/03/2011 20:08

Oh thanks! Yeah it's a chesty cough. I haven't given Ds any honey yet as I read it's best to wait till they are 2. Although he is nearly there and I am probably being PFB.

I do have the Karvol capsules and I completely forgot to use any steam or vics etc when I put him to bed Confused

I'll see how he is tonight and try get some Manuka tomorrow.

Honey can be given from 12 months Smile

taken from BBC website - Honey - don't give honey to your baby until he or she is a year old. There's a very small risk of a certain type of food poisoning called infant botulism. By one, your baby's digestive system has developed enough to stop the bacteria growing

TragicallyHip · 08/03/2011 22:07

Thanks Smile I did know it was from 12 months but then read something about them changing it till 2yo, same with nuts. Wish I could remember where I read that now.

I'm sure it will be fine now but haven't needed too give him any iyswim. I am probably being pfb too Blush

I have only heard him cough once tonight so fingers crossed he is getting better!

Does is have to be 10 or 15+? What is the difference between them all?
