Some advise please.

DD is 18 months old and goes to Childminder Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Last Tuesday when I collected DD, CM told me that her little girl had been in contact with children that now had Chicken pox.
Today (Sunday)childminder has informed me her little girl has chicken pox, first spots appeared yesterday.

CM is willing to take DD, even if she develops Chicken pox, provided she happy in herself. HOWEVER, and this is a BIG HOWEVER. I am getting married on the 25th March Confused

So my questions are (this could get lengthy)

  1. Do I keep her away from CM, or is it too late she has already been exposed as CP is contagious before spots appear ?
This would mean me taking holfiday from work.
  1. If she has caught CP when can I expect to see the spots appear ?
  1. How long will is CP expected to last ?

Any other useful information would be appreciated as "forwarned is forarmed" or whatever the saying is. I am now panicing BIG TIME

  1. The CM's little girl will be infectious til they've scabbed over.
  2. A few days in, ime, after general malaise and temp. Or it could be the first you know about it!
  3. 10 days? Start to finish? Although the doc has told me some can go on for 3 weeks...

I'm in the middle of it with DS1 right now. We're on day 3 and he's miserable and spotty. But, so far, it's been like a mild viral infection and with Calpol etc he's been rallying. Was much iller with s flu before Xmas.

Good luck and congrats for the 25th! I'm sure she'll be OK for the big day and if not, the usual should cover it.

12 days between exposure and spots I think. DS has it atm, no idea where he got it from! It's bloody contagious.

Congratulations on your wedding!

Bumperlicious · 06/03/2011 21:13

Eeek, I would say it's too late to keep her away. Spots can take 2-3 weeks to come out which will take you right up to your wedding :(

I think the best you can hope for is that it comes and goes before your wedding. FWIW DD1 (who had CP last week) was only unwell in herself for about 2 days. we kept her dosed up on anti histamines from the gp. I guess you were planning on having her at your wedding? that might be a bit of a problem if she is infectious.

Sympathies for you!

IHeartKingThistle · 06/03/2011 21:14

Oh and it doesn't have to be horrible, DS is pretty much OK in himself and doesn't have any spots on his face!

suzikettles · 06/03/2011 21:17

Ds was exposed at least 3 times (that we know of) before he caught CP. 2 of those exposures were very close/playing/sharing toys etc and he still didn't catch it.

Fingers crossed for you! I'd be tempted to keep her away for the next week if I were you and hope she's not been infected so far.

Mmm the pox is rampant round here at the mo and there are still kids who have not had it! Maybe you'll strike lucky Smile .

HaveToWearHeels · 06/03/2011 21:43

Thanks all, it really is a dilema. I have never had CP that my Mum knows of, might have been a mild case and she didn't realise, despite being exposed several times as an adult. Best case I suppose is that she may follow me and either be immune or get it mildly eeek !

Well after a bit of internet research we decided to keep DD away from CM, just to mitigate the chances of her getting it. CM was so apologetic, but completely not her fault. Her DD is coping well and isn't too poorly...FINGERS CROSSED
