Diabetes In 2.5Year old DD, Help

StaryNightSky · 06/03/2011 17:54

Hi All

My DD is 2.5. Over that last few months things have changed. Right here goes

She is Drinking Like a horse.
Weeing like a horse
Has repeated "nappy rash" even after potty trained for nearly 12months. Which is virutally impossible to clear
Has become very difficult about food. Once ate everything put infront of her now is VERY picking
Goes has DAYS when she is STAVING. you litterally can not keep up with the food intake.
Has been wetting the bed again (been dry for 12months, not change in routine, WW infect) this seems to occure at the same time as Heavy particulalry heaving drinking days, and when the "nappy rash show"
She is having TERRIBLE temper tamtrums and I MEAN terrible I had one the other day that went on for 45mins (I TIME IT) and if you look at her face she seems to have no controll over the tantrums.

Both DH and I have Diabetes Run in the family line and We thought there might be a possibilty so I have been taking her Blod Sugar in the morning and at Bed time (I have not been able to get a reading after she eats as my Parents have her after nursey)

I am getting readings in the morning of 60 to 70 and in the evening of 55 to 65 MG/DL (we are not in the UK)

What do you think? is Diabetes a possible?

I have spoken with the nursery and apparently they have been wondering the same thing as it is SUCH a change in her behaviour.

There are also some strange other symptons but I don´t know if they are related so I have left them out.

Finally she has had a bad chest (raning from broncitus to a cough) for 5 months has had antibiotics etc, but it never seems to go,

I'm afraid that I don't know anything about diabetes, but it definitely sounds like it could be a possibility due to your family link and the symptoms you've given.

I would be taking her to the doctor asap, but thats about all the help I have.

controlpantsandgladrags · 07/03/2011 09:33

It sounds like it could be a possibility. I'm afraid I don't understand your blood sugar readings but I would take her to the GP. Has she lost weight?

StaryNightSky · 07/03/2011 11:30

She has lost weight with no really reason!

I have an appointment at the Hosp tommorow.

The reading are in the american format, would be in the region of 3 to 4.4 in the Uk format

Thanks

Let us know how you get on!

Saltire · 07/03/2011 13:19

Oh yes definitely sounds like diabetes. Hope you get on ok, and remember if it is diabetes, it's not the end of the world. it's not curable, but it is manageable. My cousin's daughter has had it since she was 2, she's backpacked round cambodia and Thailand. My brother has ahd it since he was 4

I hope the appointment goes ok. 3 to 4.4 makes me think not diabetes......you would expect blood sugar to be high not low if the body isn't making insulin. Possibly hypoglycemia?

StaryNightSky · 07/03/2011 17:25

Nothing fazes me too much. So no problem if it IS dibetes. The thing is when I have looked on line (the curse of the modern age) children often present with very low blood sugar for diabetes rather than execptionally HIGH. Not sure why.

Any way will have to see what the doc´s say tommorow.

Thanks All

We have done repeated courses of antibiotics, steriods (I am brittle asthamtic) we have tried inhallers and spacer at night. But we just can´t shake it. Again online (god I hat that fraze) it is often liked with diabetes.

Shall have to wait and see

What are the unusual symptoms?

NurseSunshine · 07/03/2011 18:53

Blood sugar readings sound too low rather than too high. However, due to symptoms and family history I would take her to the docs and ask for blood tests

paddyclamp · 07/03/2011 22:30

Those levels sound on the low side to me...the conversion for US is to divide by 18...it's unusual to get a blood sugar of below 4 in a non-diabetic so i wonder if she is hypoglycaemic!

How long has she had these symptoms?...The reason i ask is that i have type 1 diabetes (since childhood) and i got very ill very quickly

Sidge · 07/03/2011 22:37

Those aren't blood sugar levels indicative of diabetes.

And many of her symptoms sound like the side effects of oral steroids.

It's worth taking her to a GP/paediatrician and get her checked over, especially if she has a persistent cough. If she does have asthma it may need more than just an inhaler once a day at night. Ideally inhaled steroids should be given twice daily.

Hope you get to the bottom of it soon Smile

StaryNightSky · 08/03/2011 15:17

The astham side of it I know more about than most doctors (brittle asthmatic for over 30 years, been in intensive care on reperators many times)

With regard to the bloods we have a referal to the diabetes pedeatric specialist as the pead is very conered about the bloods.

We also have a referal to the infantile asthamtic pead's for them to lok at the medication for that as well.

So a good result for a vist to the paedatrics in SPAIN.

Thanks

Hi Oblomov :)

StaryNightSky · 20/03/2011 09:20

Hi Guys

Sorry for the lack of update. I have been getting my head around things. DD is diagnosed with Hyperinsulinism. We are in Spain so don´t have access to the GOSH unit but her symptons are not sever at the moment so we are going to TRY diet approach for the next 3 months and see if we can get it undercontroll. Any help greatly recieved. Basically she needs to follow a diabetic diet and have blood sugars regualalry checked as her body makes far too much insulin so witht ehright diet we MAY be able to stabilise it. But I can not find much infomation about this option. HELP

Hi

No we have just had the diagnosis. There is as I understand it, very few places in the world geared up to work out the exact cause.

First step is to try and get her on a stablising diet. Then we can start looking for causes when we get the suitable referrals. But the infomation on GOSH site ie very worrying.

Thanks
