DS has had an awful cough an cold for a few weeks. noticed on last friday that he had a red and really mucky eye. Took him to Gp who said it was bacterial conjunctivitis, that they tended to use a 'watch and wait' approach' but DS was a in definate need of antibiotic eye drops so he would prescribe them straight away. was advised to use for 4 days. Finished course yesterday, eye looked more or less back to normal.
Well as today has progressed it is back with a vengeance, both eyes now very pink, really really mucky, am cleaning with cooled boiled water and a small pinch of salt (as directed by gp) but the dishcrge comes back within a bout 5 mins max!!
Am panicking, am so crap at coping when DC's are ill with anything I dont have a lot of experience in ;-(
Am having visions of Ds going bling or something, please tell me to get a grip!!

Please don't panic most babies get this at some point especially with a cold. Make sure you clean each eye separately with the salt water wiping from inside to out, once per wipe, to stop reinfection

Are you breastfeeding by the way? That always clears conjunctivitis up really quickly in my experience

Please keep calm. Looks worse than it is. Back to gp tomorrow. Yes it looks a bit nasty and is not very nice, but in reality is very very minor and no harm will come to ds.
Both my ds's have had it quite alot. from nursery. fortunately they are hardly ever ill from anything else. Nurseries used to have a non attendance policy with it, unless the child had been clear of it for x days. Now they are allowed in and the nursery will administer the drops. which just confirms tome, the fact that the rules have been laxed on it. (not life threatening Wink )
Please try to stop worrying.

Thank you both for replying.
Was just expecting the drops to 'work' and got a bit frightened at how swiftly it came back and worse even.
Will go back to gp tomorrow. This will be fourth visit in a week, third for DS and i have been onvce for me as well.
My anxiety levels are really bad at the mo!! Sad

Surprised the drops didn't work. MInd you, I have tried quite a few and some work better than others.
But still, fact is you need new drops.
I have chloramphenicol and fuciithalmic. both more like waxy vasline, rather than drops. Almost impossoble to get in. But works better than drops. Takes me and dh together and ds2 cries, but they so do the business !!

Thanks oblomov! I think the drops would have done the trick if I had continued with them, NHS website suggests using them for two days after redness has gone, I must admit I thought four days wasnt long but I suppose the GP must have had a reason for that advice. Will ask tomorrow.
Deep breath!!

Hope your DS is better now? My Ds is allergic to chloramphenicol, but took a week or treating conjunctivitus for us to realise that! Poor Ds looked awful. Not sure why it hadn't occured to me as i reacted to them many moons ago!
