11 month DS's eyes are looking really sore and has got what looks like catarrh or pus coming out of them. I don't think they are itchy, but they are def sore and red. It is both of his eyes, he does seem to have a little bit of a cold as well.

Could this be conjunctivitis? And if it is will the Docs actually give him anything?

Thanku!

Sounds like conjunctivitis, may need some drops. Are they hot, red and swollen on the rim or just bloodshot?

Yep, take him to GP and you will get some eye drops. You can actually buy them over the counter if you are an adult using them but for children they have to be prescribed. I did get some the other week over the counter, after ringing NHS direct they said they couldn't tell me to use them but that she would be prescribed the same thing. We'd had it before so I was happy to do this. Always worth checking though.

Apparently no tears shampoo is good for washing the eyes with - out some in cooled boiled water and wash from inside corner to out with a fresh piece of cotton wool each time you touch the eye.

Thanks for the reply! They are all of them, they are puffy and red, one of them is bloodshot. Thanks

Are they hot though? Little kids can get something called periorbital cellulitis, looks like this:

uk.images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&fr=yhs-avg-chrome&sz=all&va=periorbital+cellulitis It's not the same as conjunctivitis and requires treatment ASAP. I'd call NHS direct and get him seen by the out of hours at least.

I would always recommend seeing a doctor, just to be sure. I wouldn't recommend using no tears shampoo tho, any chemical can irritate the eye, I know it says no more tears but if the eye is already irritated anything other than cooled boiled water is going to make it very sore. My dd2 has very poorly eyes and we wouldn't have known just how bad if I hadn't kept taking her back to the local eye hospital. I would also ask for preservative free drops if drops are required, these are much gentler on the eye

Hi, thanks for the replies. Been to see the doctor this morning, it's just a really bad case of conjunctivitis. They gave him some eye ointment and it should clear up in a few days. :)
