Could DS be allergic to strawberries?

Ok - bear with me, I am rather crap at explanations...

DS is 13months. He has only ever had strawberries twice - sheer fluke really.

The first time was on his first birthday in the afternoon, that night he was violently projectile vomiting for about 2 hours followed by being unable to keep water down for another few Sad we spoke to nhs direct at the time to check we were doing the right things with looking after him - I suspected the strawberries, but it being his birthday it could have been a multitude of things really....

The second time was today - I have held off as been unsure since the first incident, but lots of people told me it probably wasn't an issue etc etc - so decided to give them another go.... he didn't want the strawberries today - so I did the same tactic I used to do with new fruits with my dd... cut up tiny and mixed into yoghurt... he only ate a few pieces before he worked out what it was and started spitting them out. This was about 1.30 / 2pm today
about 6 I was getting him ready for bath and saw he had a rash all over really - worse around elbows (quite raised and lumpy) but little spots on and off over arms / legs / tummy / back / bum - and a few on his chin

he has been unsettled this evening and hasn't settled for the evening properly yet - gave him neurofen 30 mins ago and covered all the spots in sudacrem as thats all we have - could it be the strawberries again?

Waiting for an nhsdirect callback at the mo and don't know anything else we can do for him

Thanks all, he is still going strong. Screaming when in his cot but hyper when I get him up... Am slowly going insane! The only pharmacy we think would be open is shut so waiting on the nurse to call as think I am right that they can tell you where to find one.... Deep breaths... Its not his fault!

you can buy anti-histamines in most supermarkets. failing that phone a friend/relative...someone will have them surely?

mummynoseynora · 25/02/2011 23:55

A baby one would be over the counter surely? Dont want to wake family at this time, as its not a life and death style emergency. Fingers crossed he seems to be starting to settle. Have just put him back to bed and no screaming yet! Nurse should be calling any minute now and then I can try for some sleep.... Am shattered

i doubt anyone would be bothered to be disturbed in this situation... most people would be understanding so i think if you can access it via someone you know, that's the way to go. you can buy anti-histamine off the shelf that can be given to children 12m+

i actually work for nhs 24 and we do have a system that tells you the nearest open pharmacy, in relation to the patient's current location... but at this time of night, you're not unlikely to get anywhere open. sometimes a major airport has one open late and i know of one in glasgow that's open 24/7. hospitals also stock antihistamines if nothing is open.

how is he right now?

blinks · 26/02/2011 00:05

i meant UNLIKELY....

mummynoseynora · 26/02/2011 00:11

He's starting to calm down... Whining on and off but in his cot and not beating me up, so its progress! Didnt realise you could get it off the shelf for that age! Argh! Oh well, hoping he settles and the woman rings soon so I can got to bed... Yawn! Very long night and 2 dc to entertain tomorrow.

Should I book an urgent appt at docs for this on Monday? If not its going to be a.couple of weeks Confused

is he distressed with the rash? when you say he's whining, does he seem to be in pain? apart from the rash (what does the rash look like) does he have any other symptoms?

is he taking fluids ok?

mummynoseynora · 26/02/2011 00:28

He was distressed, but has slowly calmed over the last hour and touched seems.to be asleep. The rash is mostly little red dots on tummy and back, with bigger lumpy type ones on arms legs, bum and a couple on chin. He took his milk fine this evening

Whining was because he couldnt get Cindy in bed I think... Was screaming in bed earlier but every time I got him.up he'd spend 5-10 mins trying to cuddle then start playing!

i think you need to try to get some anti-histamine into him tonight but it doesn't sound too major at the moment... sounds like poss urticaria rash. he might also be having some abdominal cramping, hence the griping etc.

i would keep an eye on him and speak to GP next week.

mummynoseynora · 26/02/2011 00:46

He's asleep and settled now but nurse should have rung an hour ago.... Is it worth me going to bed?!

is his cot in same room as you? i'd kip near him. because of his very young age, i still think you should get him assessed tonight so take the phone in with you.

mummynoseynora · 26/02/2011 01:00

Am currently on sofa in lounge, we are in a kilometre so he's next door. Will doze here rather than go to bed until they've rung so won't fall into a deep sleep.

Thanks blinks

off to bed, good luck! if you call nhs direct again, use a different phone if possible so you don't miss your call back.

mummynoseynora · 26/02/2011 08:53

Thanks all for support last night. He's finally had some proper sleep for the last 2.5 hours!

The nurses agreed he is probably allergic. The first one said portion should be on the shelf, so woke dh and sent him to asda where it was only in the closed pharmacy!

mummynosey - my friend's little girl had a similar reaction to strawberries when she was little (vomiting) and then a rash. She also started to refuse them in things so she obviously knew that they didn't agree with her! She is 3 now and seems to have grown out of it so your DS may be fine with them in the future.

mummynoseynora · 26/02/2011 18:45

If anyone is still reading this, we now have piriton and gave DS some at lunchtime as the angrier bits of his rash are still quite bad. Also got some calamine lotion to put on them. He seems fine in himself now - had some lovely nappies as predicted by the lovely middle of the night nurse, but the hyper boy hasn't slept much more than he normally would in the day - he only got 4 out of his usual 12.5 hours last night!

I am pleased to hear that things have calmed down a bit.

Take care of yourself and I hope you get to catch up on some of that missed sleep later.
