Smelly discharge in DD's knickers

DD recently potty trained/training and today we've noticed a yellowy discharge in her knickers at the front. It slightly smells of fish. Is this normal for freshly trained potty users of the female persuasion? Or should I take her to the GP? No temperature, no other obvious symptoms. Except she has been kinda moody/flat since potty training but that could just be toddlerism!

take her to the GP.

She'sd just porry trained, she's got her nappy of for the first time - "Oh My GOD! I have a new hole!!! I wonder what would fit up there???"

I know a woman whose daughter had to have some sweetcorn removed.

I agree, I was told yesterday (after visiting a GP with a similar odour) that a fish smell indicates bacterial vaginosis. So it could be that she's caused herself a small infection. Better to check really

Take her to out of hours tomorrow. Don't wait until Monday, but similarly, don't wake her up right now.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I knew that's what I should do... I just needed to be told! Next question though. Do you think it can wait until Monday or should I go to the out-of-hours GP? Sorry. This sounds so much like I'm a crap mum with no sense! Blush

My DD has this and also urinary tract infections since potty training. I have treated the discharge problem by bathing frequently and using johnsons top to toe. Don't use any bubble bath, and wash hair right at end just before they get out. Apparently they can irritate the vagina and the urethra. Make sure that you wipe them from front to back, and supervise their wiping. After passing urine also wipe from front to back. Fresh cotton knickers during the day, and a nightie for bed with no knickers to allow the air to circulate. Ensure that trousers aren't tight around the crotch area. I have done this, and the discharge has gone in about 3 days. These problems seem to occur if we miss baths for a night or two. I think that once they are old enough to clean themselves thoroughly after a poo this should resolve itself. It is very common in young girls following potty training. Good luck, hope it clears up soon.

That's very insightful onedge - thanks. I feel reassured by this. Smile

yep my dd has just had a phase of this - gp says its very very common in little girls. it can be quite external my dd's cleared up with a bit of antibiotic ointment and some hydrocotisone for where she had scratched, sometimes an antibiotic needed - gp asked us to swab before giving them - takes a week to come back. sometimes it can sort its self after a day or so, or following a nice warm bath with very plain wash. dd's comes and goes, usually very mild and easily treated. hope your dd sorted out soon.

Took DD to the GP in the end today as this morning she told me, quite tearfully, that her bottom was sore and that it hurt when she went for a wee. They tested a urine sample but nothing showed up so they've taken a swab and prescribed some Canesten just in case.

Thanks all for your responses.
