16mo with high temp but don't know why

DS has had a high temp (variable but up to 39.5 at times) since lunchtime yesterday, no snot, ears look ok, chest clear, no obvious local pain (not clutching anything or chewing fingers ie teeth)

He looks pale and droopy eyed but is eating. I am Calpoling and Calprofenning him alternately to keep his temp down. He varies from cheery to whinging, depending on where we are in the Calpol cycle.

What could this be? Even the GP was baffled.

TIA

Did the gp check a urine sample?

sneezecakesmum · 25/02/2011 12:52

Urine is a good one, but often goes hand in had with vomiting. If the urine looks clear and there is no pain it is less likely but not impossible.

There are zillions of viruses out there unidentified Shock and it probably is one of them!

He could be brewing something like chicken pox, or some other poxy rash - you'll find out in a day or so.

I take it no recent vaccinations?

The fever should last no more than 3 days. Carry on with your treatments and keep pushing the fluids. If the fever carries on beyond that or new symptoms develop its back to the GP.

My DS had a terrible UTI at the start of the year and similarly high temps. Maybe ring the GP and ask for them to do a urine sample if not yet done

mistressploppy · 25/02/2011 12:57

GP did give me a pot and suggested urine as a possibility. DS is asleep now but I shall give his nappy a good sniff when he wakes, and attempt a collection!

Will keep alert for spots.

I have made an appt for tomorrow morning anyway.

He has had a bout of ill health recently - fluey bug and ear infection at the start of the month, then D+V, now this Sad

To collect urine try a pantie liner in the nappy where he wees, then just wring it out. Lovely Smile Would have been nice to have got a proper little bag
