dd has been prescribed this today, but I'm a bit concerned about using this with her current dose of inhalers (the maximum brown inhaler for her age, apparently) Naff all instructions given with the prescription, so have read the leaflet, which has just given me concerns instead...

I will be watching this with interest as it has been mentioned for DS (15 months) if no improvement in the next 2 months.

A few parents on the asthma thread have children on it so may be worth looking there.

interesting. It's been prescribed to try to calm 'allergic rhinitis' and various apparent inflamation, so that in turn it seems we can reduce the brown inhaler. Forgot to mention she's 5.

We had DS on it last year, the side effects were horrific. He is 5.

His personality changed, he was very depressed, behaviour issues, crying all the time, night terrors, literally climbing the walls and screaming, absolutely awful.

hazeyjane · 23/02/2011 22:35

Dd1 had it when she was about 3 and a half, and she had terrible nightmares and night terrors on it, so it was stopped. She was on it for a couple of months and we didn't see in any improvement in her asthma in that time.

Jojay · 23/02/2011 22:37

My DS1 has been on it since he was about 2 1/2, he's now 4 1/2.

He takes it alongside his Seratide inhaler (heftier than the brown one I believe) and the combination has been brilliant for him, he is much much better than he was.

We never had a problem with nightmares or any of the other side effects.

He used to have it in powder form which we mixed into custard or puree and never had a problem getting him to eat it. He now has it in chewy tablet form with no problems either.

I'm no expert but I believe it has a very different action to the inhalers and it's not a steroid as such, but don't quote me on that.

I know it's scary pumping more and more drugs into your child, I have agonised over it too, but seeing the difference in my son on the right meds for him has convinced me it's the right thing to do Smile

With asthma there always seems to be a degree of trial and error in getting the combination of drugs and dosage right - we went through endless combo's but we've hit the jackpot now, thank goodness - I hope it works for you too.

MrsShrekTheThird · 23/02/2011 22:38

stewieg's, that's the same reason dd has been given it :) She's also on antihistamine daily. Was hoping that we would be able to reduce that as well....

not keen on all these nightmare tales :( poor dc.

Ds been on it for 3 months, no side effects and it's changed our lives. We've gone from admissions every couple of weeks to none since he started it. I was hesitant but wish I'd tried it earlier.

singersgirl · 24/02/2011 10:14

DS2 took it for 2 years and never had any side effects. His asthma/severe viral wheezing episodes steadily improved over that period as well, so it's hard to know how much it helped. With that and a home nebuliser we managed to keep him out of hospital.

eclipse · 24/02/2011 18:32

My ds (5) has been taking this for over a year, having previously had similar symptoms to those described by StewieGriffinsMum. He now is off all inhalers (when he had been on adult-dose of steroid inhaler) in the summer and only takes steroids in the winter and singulair at the start of a cough or cold and it's working well. No side-effects at all.

sneezecakesmum · 24/02/2011 23:23

official guff

This is what the prescriber reads regarding the prescribing of med. side effects, contraindications etc. But don't forget your prescriber will weigh up all the pros and cons regarding your childs needs, so dont be put off.

newportstateofmind · 24/02/2011 23:36

My ds (20 mo) was prescribed the granules a couple of months ago, after an overnight hospital stay to monitor constant wheezing whenever he has a cough/cold. He has also had the brown inhaler morning and night and the blue one when needed since he was 7 months old.

We were told to use it at the onset of a cough/cold, and on the couple of occasions we have done, it did seem to stop him getting any worse. He didn't have any side effects either, thank god.
