Hi, I noticed today that my dd could not hear properly. She kept saying parden and uh. My dh said her name and said something and she didn't react. She also put the voulme on the tv up v high. Thinking back at least on last week she did a few times do this but first I thought she was just not listening or just not answering me but now realise that she prob didn't hear me. Could it be glue ear? Or something else? What? Don't know how long it has been like this but I think I can only say I have noticed it in the last week. And maybe more now cause I have not been at work and been with her all days. Any thoughts

I have had 3 dd with glue ear and once it's been sorted they're speech has improved tremendously. you don't say how old your dd is but if there is a problem I can only say the earlier it's picked up the better. there may not be a problem but it's worth getting your gp to take a look

Glue ear can be diagnosed with a very quick painless test. Visit your GP. Has she had a cold or a bug recently? Glue ear can remain after it's over.

ask GP/HV for referral to audiology for proper hearing test if this has been a long running problem. Ask whoever looks after her whilst you are at work if they have noticed a problem.

Hi thanks for advice. My dd is 4. Went to GP today. He said she has a lot of wax in her ears (but they always say that) and he said it might just be that. he said it could be glue ear but they cannot check until they get rid of the wax. He has referred me to a place where they will get rid of the wax but could take 2 weeks to get appointment. if it is not better when it has been removed need to check if glue ear. Have 2 major concerns. We are flying tomorrow and am really worried that might cause some damage to the ear if she does have glue ear. Second concern is, she is at school and if it is not better by next week when she goes back I am really worried how she will cope at school not hearing properly.

not sure about flying - shouldn't be a problem unless congested but you need to mention it to the teacher - they are usually pretty good with these things. She can make sure your dd is sat near the front and facing her when she speaks. hope this helps

my DS also had problems with his ears when he was 4 (he is now5)

His school was fab and made sure he was sat at th front for everything....

GP said the same thing, his ears had lots of wax in....

Has she had lots of ear infctions lately??

BTW we did a flight (to Spain) and DS did complain of pain but the staff on board had calpol for him which worked Smile

DD had glue ear which were fixed with grommets. She did lots of flying and suffered no ill effects.
She did say that sucking a sweet on take off and landing helped Hmm

Thanks. If it is still bad next week I will speak to teacher and will bring something she can chew or suck on the plain and some calpol just in case. She has not had any ear infections but has had a cold. Simpson for your ds is that all it turned out to be wax? How long did it take before hearing got back to normal?
