He's 1 week old and normal barrier cream, isn't really helping. lots of little scabby cracks and puffy feet :(

Poor little thing :(

I found my DCs had dry skin in their first weeks and I used baby oil to help.

I just used olive oil (as advised by the midwives). It cleared up quite quickly.

Aveno cream 2 or 3 times a day was the only thing that worked for DS2 (3 weeks overdue so red raw and super scaly). It's expensive but you can get it at the chemist and if it helps your GP can prescibe it too. DS2 also had steroid cream in short bursts.

Poor little one - do you have any idea why? I would stick to something like olive oil or one of the all natural creams/lotions/oils eg. pur baby or organic monkey - just because their skin is so sensitive at that age and you don't want to risk aggravating it more. You won't know yet whether he is sensitive to the chemicals in some of those creams - we found out the hard way with DS1. :(

I second the olive oil, it was recommended by my MW.

A lot of creams contain SLS/Parabens which can cause skin sensitivity.

Poor baby [sad[

Put a really thick layer of vaseline on DSs feet and a pair of socks. A few nights of this and they will be as smooth as his bum! Works brilliantly on adults too

DD2 is 22 days old and was 12 days overdue so was very dry and peely when she was born. I was a bit wary of using olive oil so I've been using the infamous Waitrose Bottom Butter which is essentially olive oil with a bit of vanilla. Smells lovely and works a treat.

thank you everyone. sorry, i lost my own thread Blush.

I've been using olive oil and we think it is helping though the cracks aren't healing yet, the feet look better generally.

thank you!

Just another thought - my DS had horrific scaly hands and I used raw shea butter (you can get it through Afro-Caribean shops or on-line) - it doesn't smell great but one tub lasts forever and you can use it until the cows come home.

Dd was born with red welts around her wrists and ankles (as though, where she'd been curled up, her skin had stuck together in her creases) and her skin was extremely dry ~ she was a week late. I used almond oil on her over her first week and it went quite quickly, though I didn't consider that she might've had a nut allergy. She didn't thankfully.
