If so did the doctor insert it or did the nurse do it?

paediatrician

OnEdge · 19/02/2011 00:43

why ?

starfishmummy · 19/02/2011 00:43

Many times. I'm oretty sure it has always been a doctor - usually a fairly junior one and if they couldn't manage it was the next "grade" up. They have even called the consultant anaesthetist in when they couldn't find a vein.

Why do you ask?

starfishmummy · 19/02/2011 00:43

pretty sure!

Chaotica · 19/02/2011 00:53

Nurse. A good paediatric one.

nappyaddict · 19/02/2011 01:00

Just wondered because I always thought a doctor had to do it but I just accidentally came across something from the Royal College of Nursing website that said nurses can do it too :)

It was always a dr did it on Ds - but he was only 8 weeks old at the the time.

larrygrylls · 19/02/2011 07:11

When our second son was 5 weeks old, we had to take him to St George's with breathing problems. He had a variety of canulas over three days and I have to say experience and a calm manner trumps qualifications on this one. Some of the nurses were brilliant and some of the doctors rather rough and panicky. It is a practical rather than an academic skill.

bumble34 · 19/02/2011 07:47

Both nurses and doctors can be trained to put cannulas in, take bloods etc Often the nurse become more experienced than the junior doctors particularly with children as the nurse tend to work there long term and the junior doctors rotate and only do short placements.

Sirzy · 19/02/2011 07:57

Ignore my previous post. Nurses did do his canulas, it was blood gases the dr always did!

neepsntatties · 19/02/2011 08:05

Dd had them last week, she was only one week old :(
Both nurses and Drs did them.

roadtrain · 19/02/2011 08:07

paeds nurse did my DS's

drivencrazy · 19/02/2011 08:14

DS had a paed do his... after a few attempts by 1 in ambulance then several more in the hospital took a few nursers to hold him still at 9 weeks old lol

Sirzy · 19/02/2011 08:21

Lol driven crazy, it's amazing how strong they can be so young and when so ill isn't it! The staff constantly comment how strong Ds is - took 5 of them to get him on cpap at 8 weeks coz he fought so much!

drivencrazy · 19/02/2011 08:28

ye it is amazing.. he also pulled his nasogastral(sp) tube out lol cant say i blame him doing that lol....

maltesers · 19/02/2011 08:29

Mainly the male doctor.

Galdem · 19/02/2011 08:30

My DD was hospitalised as a baby and the nurses did it.

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 19/02/2011 08:30

Paed dr did ds1's the first time and she was horrible and he managed to pull the first one out before she had finished...he was screaming and she gave me a row for crying.
The next one a nurse did and he barely noticed it happening and she was lovely to me the whole time I was in with him.

smugmumofboys · 19/02/2011 08:35

Both of my DSes had to have them at birth Sad.

I found the whole thing too upsetting so made DH take them. I think the Dr did them.

My mum went as well with DS1 and itreally upset her. Feel teary now. It was 8 years ago.

Sirzy · 19/02/2011 08:38

Lol driven crazy, Ds had the feed tube down his throat but worked it out with his tongue so they had to do ng with him which he left thankfully! (couldn't get to coz of everything else in his nose anyway!)

MollieO · 19/02/2011 08:49

Ds had them from birth and a doctor always did it. Nurses did his feeding tube (which he managed to pull out most days). Doctor always did blood tests as well. Nurses did the heel prick test.

oricella · 19/02/2011 08:51

paed dr at 7 weeks - after the second they put in a central line in her groin, but she was still a true spaghetti fest of tubes

GwendolineMaryLacey · 19/02/2011 08:53

DD had one at 22 hours old :( was done by a paediatrician.

Alouiseg · 19/02/2011 08:58

Loads of times over the course of 3.5 years. In the local, General Hospital a doctor always did it but in Addenbrookes the nurses did it.
