Hiya
My 2 year old son swallowed a small balloon today. He seems absolutely fine. Are there any doctors who could reassure me that it will just pass through hinm?
Thanks

I would phone NHS direct.

WorzselMummage · 17/02/2011 20:17

Are you sure he swallowed it and didn't inhale it ?

NorthernGobshite · 17/02/2011 20:29

I would phone NHS direct also.

ilythia · 17/02/2011 20:32

YUp, call NHS. For sure.

sneezecakesmum · 17/02/2011 22:20

I take it it wasn't inflated! Luckily it should pass through his system with no problems, it is non toxic and no sharp edges. You will have to check his poo for a couple of days to make sure it has passed - so happy hunting!

I vaguely remember seeing something like this on the telly. The balloon managed to get full of food and caused a blockage.
Please contact a health care professional.

Just go to A&E. NHS Direct will just send you there anyway (IMvHO)

Nippolopolis · 18/02/2011 13:05

How are you getting on OP?

TotorosOcarina · 18/02/2011 13:06

A&E

swallowing/inhaling balloons is very dangerous.

blinks · 18/02/2011 13:07

yes, A&E, definitely.

CarrieF · 18/02/2011 13:34

Thanks for all your advice. I have spoken to a Paediatrician who has told me that it should pass through within 48 hours. If it hasn`t by then, I then need to go to a doctor, or if he looks like he has stomach pains then I also need to go. So am holding off for now.

Glad you got some advice. Now get those rubber gloves out Grin

blinks · 18/02/2011 14:24

you also need to be checking every bowel movement i'm afraid.

sneezecakesmum · 18/02/2011 22:22

Carrie - I work for NHSDirect (for my sins) and I worked for years in A&E before that! Should have said that I guess. Soft non toxic things are usually OK.

sneezecakesmum · 18/02/2011 22:25

PS. If he had inhaled it he would be going navy blue and making some very funny noises! Big Big diffenence and one you'd NEVER miss!

CarrieF · 19/02/2011 18:26

Ah! thanks for the reassurance. Feel a lot less worried

You would know if he had inhaled it.

It will pass in a couple of days.
