flouride varnishing - what do I need to know?

DS2's nursery have been 'selected' to participate in flouride varnishing every 6 months.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Are there any concerns about it that I should be aware of before I give consent?

TIA

are you in Scotland? Is it part of the childsmile campaign?. It isnt offered in my area but have heard of it.

Our school is doing it. I'm fine with it and have consented for the girls to have it.

Yes Seona, it is part of childsmile (we're in S Lanarkshire). I've googled and it sounds OK. Expat, you, of course, come from the land of lovely teeth, so I trust your judgment on this. Grin

I aksed about this on here a month or so ago.
Not something that many knew about.
I have declined to get it done so far.

Can I ask why Ineedacleaner?

my DP had this done when he was a kid. He now has badly brown stained teeth caused by the excess of fluoride. (we are in scotland, so no fluoride in water)

we're next door in N Lanarkshire!

Because from speaking to a dentist on here and in real life although there is no strong eveidence to say that long term it does any harm (although I have read excess fluoride can be as bad for teeth as insufficient fluoride) there is also nothing that really proves that there is any long term benefit to regular teeth painting with the fluoride varnish in a child that doesn't have any caries already.
I just firgured at the moment if it isn't broke don't fix it, DS1 has good dental hygene and little in the way of sugary snacks and drinks so for the time being I am continuing to refuse.

The idea of the child smile is that they get it twice a year at nursery and twice a year at the dentist so I have ample oppertunity if I change my mind but I don't see it.

I had it done as a child, we also had flouride in the water.

I have very white teeth and don't know anyone who had staining from it all.

Mine have excellent dental hygiene, I'm a bit fanatical about it, though (my elder two floss before bed and brush twice/day). The two-year-old brushes twice/day.

They do eat my baked goods every day and a square of chocolate after they finish their homework.

No fizzy drinks, though.

I had fluoride treatment as a child. Not sure if coincidence but did not have a filling until I was nearly 30 and that was in a wisdom tooth where it was very difficult to clean.
