Opinions please - is this rash a reaction to antibiotics or scabies?

My DD has been treated for a urinary infection with trimethoprim. She is on day 7 of a 10 day course and having 5ml twice a day. A couple of days ago I noticed a rash on her tummy which became redder when she got warm. The rash is like lots of little red pin pricks.

Today the school phoned as the rash was worse and had spread to her neck. I phoned the pharmacy and they said to take her to the doctor which I did. He looked at her and said it wasn't an allergic rash as it's not raised and blotchy. He also said he hates trying to diagnose rashes in children Hmm. So after much ummin and arrrhing he found three tiny red spots between two of her fingers and diagnosed scabies.

The rash is not particularly itchy so I don't think this is right. To me it seems more likely to be the antibiotics as the information said a rash is a reasonably common reaction.

The rash is just on her tummy, chest and neck. Has anyone else had experience of a rash due to trimethoprim?

I don't really know what to do - I am nearly 39 weeks pg and don't really want to slap lots of cream over my two daughters, myself and husband on the off chance? I am tempted to the stop the ab's and see if that works first or is that not responsible? She has had a weeks worth and seems totally better.

Any ideas?

I'd be tempted to finish the anti-bs and then see. ds had scabies and by the time he had a rash on his stomach he had had them for quite sometime (he'd had the rash on his hand a while and I'd ignored it Blush). I doubt another couple of days will make much difference.

well, rash is included in the side effect

StrangewaysHereICome · 16/02/2011 22:08

That's what I thought nightcat and the fact she is not itching like mad is making me doubt the doctor. The pharmacist said she should stop the ab's.

edited was your son really itchy with it? DD's rash first appeared on her stomach, the three spots between her fingers are smaller and lighter pink so are hard to see. They could have been there a while I suppose but she hasn't been itchy Confused Before she went to bed the rash is now on her back, armpits and bottom, is that a bit quick for scabies to spread?

Thanks for the replies.

I'd say there are 2 possible reasons for this, one is that she is sensitive to a/bs per se and the other that a/bs lower the immunity so she could easily catch something that she would normally not - my gut feeling is to stop a/b (but I am not a dr).
You can improve immunity by taking Zinc supplement.

oh yes, and I would also give her probiotics

The rash on his hand was itchy and he had it was present for some time before the body rash came out. The rash on the hand usually marks where the mite has burrowed and the body rash is a reaction the the mite breaking down under the skin ( I think - although my memory is sketchy as it was some years ago). The body rash didn't spread that quickly.

Has your daughter had anti-biotics b4? The first time mine had them she came out with a rash and was declared allergic to them.

My daughter has viral rash currently from her infected throat and ears, sounds same rash, gets itcher the hotter they become so keep her cool and we where told just use olive oil on skin after bath as closet to bodies own oil.Should start to fade after few days.

Racking my memory here but I think scabies can be diagnosed with a skin scraping to see the little buggers under a microscope. Print this and take it to the GP explaining about the incredible faff you are faced with regarding especially if he is unsure of the diagnosis.

regarding treatment doh

StrangewaysHereICome · 17/02/2011 13:34

Thanks everyone. I woke up in a right state in the night, suddenly panicking that if we all have scabies and I give birth soon I will give it to the baby which would be so horrible Sad.

I didn't give her the ab's last night or this morning and the rash is much better today so I am pretty sure it is not scabies. I am also shocked that the dr didn't say we all needed treating and everything I have googled says everyone needs treating. I will definitely take her back and get a proper diagnosis.

deezer she has had amoxycillin before but not this specific ab. It does sound similar to your dd as she had a flu type virus before the urine infection. Hope your dd is better soon.

Thanks again.
