Can chicken pox start on DD's bottom?

Our DD who rarely gets nappy rash, has come out in some nasty spots on the top of her bottom, almost back area and she has a few spots on knees/ankles/wrists. They've not filled with fluid etc yet, but the ones on her bottom are angry looking.

She was a bit unwell the last couple of days...temp, off her food/bottles, grumpy (when normally cheerful)....and I've just been putting this down to her second tooth coming through. She's 8 months.

I'm worried this might be chicken pox, but always thought chicken pox started on the body?

I would get it checked out. My DS had chicken pox last year (exactly a year actually!) and his started around the bottom too. We were on holiday, and I thought he must have got some kind of insect in his nappy during the night, poor boy! Spots spread to rest of body and face the next day. He was off-colour and really moany for a few days beforehand too.

Yes, it frequently starts on the bottom. The spots start by looking like clusters of flat red/pink patches then raise up into fluid filled blisters in 1-2 days.

aye I agree with the others...dd's started on her bottom and I thought Hmm and continued to watch them and they slowly migrated up to her torso. Make sure when you go into the gp to tell them what you suspicions are, as they tend to want to put you in a separate room or take you right away because of the highly contagious nature.

Thx everyone. Some of her spots have started to fill, so I think it's most likely chicken pox.....poor wee thing :)

hmm, reviving this thread from last year. This is the joy of MN - relevant discussions. I was just putting 5 yr old DS to bed when I saw spots on his bottom and immediately thought of contact dermatitis / something viral because he was headachey and vomiting 2 days ago / or reaction to new asthma inhaler (but rare according to the accompanying leaflet). Never did CP cross my mind. Ho hum, did notice a spot on 1yr old DD's face earlier and it fleetingly crossed my mind that it could be something more than marmite ricecake rubbing. A call to the GP in the morning I think
