20 mo with conjunctivitis?

Atomant · 14/02/2011 12:20

DD had a temp last night of 39 woke up this morning with runny nose & a watery eye which is full of gunk. I'm bathing it with water as I can't get a docs appointment til Friday. Pharmacy said they can't give her anything as she's under 2 am I doing the right thing?

Googled & it seems it viral rather than bacterial should I still take her to the docs? She seems fine except for the cold and a bit if a temp.

Hoping it might clear in a couple of days, any idea how long it takes to clear up?

TIA

My ds has a doc's appt at 3.15pm as he has conjunctivitis too. He got it from playgroup. He is 2.7 but dd is 4 months and im going to ask doctor advise about if she gets it, I will get back to you.:)

Odelay · 14/02/2011 12:34

oooo i've got a 20 mth old with it in both eyes, very, very sticky and pink. DP spoke to the triage nurse (you have to get past her to get an appoinmtment with our doc's) and apaprently she's done him a prescription for drops, will let you knwo what they are when i get back from work.

now to get drops in to the sore eyes of a 20 mth old.....

TysonNobdie86 · 14/02/2011 17:36

I never got a word in edgeways about the eyes, sorry. Doctor just gave eye drops and was more concerned about ds's sickness. Sorry again :(

Atomant · 14/02/2011 18:01

Thanks hope your DS is better soon. This is our first experience of conjunctivitis, DDs eye has gotten pink over the course of the day so I'm
pretty sure that's what it is. She's now totally
miserable poor thing. I'll def keep docs appointment on Thursday at this rate. She hates having her eye cleansed too. Can't imagine drops would be any easier though.

Hmm, my DS aged 3 has just got this for the first time, his eyes are so dark now and sore and he is never ill so he is really struggling. I had planned on not taking him to docs and keeping him in and bathing when necc. Not sure what to do now, he isn't sleeping much and I'm ill and the lack of lseep is killing me!! he has bad cough too..........ho hum, just joining the advice band wagon sorry!

CPtart · 14/02/2011 20:35

Chloramphenicol is best for conjunctivitis. Can buy over the counter but check at what age can be given. Use cool boiled water for cleansing, and avoid cotton wool - it can shed fibres in the eye.

Atomant · 14/02/2011 20:47

Thanks CP pharmacist said it's 2years plus so DD is too young. I'll stop using cotton wool though hadn't thought of that.

Ok. Ds 20 mths was prescribed chloramphenicol. So far he's been very good about letting me put it in, he had two doses yesterday afternoon / evening and I expected a miraculous recovery but this morning his poor eyes were firmly glued shut and he cried and cried so I did too Sad

lukewarmmama · 15/02/2011 10:13

You can get drops from the doc, but its not totally necessary - just can cut down the duration. It should clear up by itself in teh fullness of time.

That's assuming you can get them in the eyes.

Which we couldn't. So we did a full course for DD2 last week, but she still has gungy eyes, and now DD1 has it too. Sigh.

Its v contagious, so make sure you use separate towels etc etc.

lukewarmmama · 15/02/2011 11:57

Oh - it can also make them feel poorly, so do give them baby paracetamol or ibuprofen if they're miserable.

Divingforpearls · 15/02/2011 15:16

I was once advised to use cool/tepid normal tea and cotton wool for conjunctivitis. I was amazed when it really worked!

Panzee · 15/02/2011 15:17

If you can get the cream instead of the drops it's easier. It's a bit like trying to give medicine to a cat... :o

Atomant · 15/02/2011 20:53

Thanks for all the info poor little DD is so miserable today it's in both eyes now despite different water & wipes for each eye & meticulous hand washing :(
roll on Thursday to get the GP to have a look.
It's a really horrible virus, soo much goo!

Thanks again, hope everyone is better soon!

My DS is bad too - though not sure if I imagined it his eys seemed a little better but he is cough cough cough and not eating and harldy drinking at all

Has very dark eyes now Hmm he has eaten 2 strawberries today (hardly eats on a good day anyway but this is extreme!)

Atomant · 15/02/2011 21:19

DD is exactly the same maxy, she's had half a yoghurt & a bowl of shreddies all day. Also has a chesty cough, runny nose and dark circles under her very pink little eyes. I could cry just looking at her :(

maxybrown · 15/02/2011 21:52

awww bless, yes DS almost looks like he has been iller than he is if that makes sense? he won't leave my side either and that's driving me daft Blush but he does look awful. He normally loves fish and will eat that no matter what, but no he refused that too Sad

Panzee · 15/02/2011 21:55

My boy started out with what we thought was conjunctivitis, but he was ill throughout and a few days later I took him back to the doctor - he had a sore throat and ear infection. Might be worth keeping an eye on.

Atomant · 15/02/2011 23:02

I know what you mean DD just looks so poorly. Just had to give her some nurofen as her temp is 39.9 & had calpol 3 hours ago.

Will def keep an eye out for other symptoms & will get doc to check her ears & throat on thurs.

Hope this passes as quickly as it came on...

well my lovely GP said 4 days - viral conjunctivitis, any longer than 4 days then bacterial! I got drops for DS this evening

WipsGlitter · 16/02/2011 21:07

panzee my LO had this too and was pretty poorly. I've got sore eyes and throat now too. So it might not be as simple as conjuctivitis.

maxybrown · 16/02/2011 21:11

me too wisps! No sign of sticky eyes for me even though sore but tight chest and coughing - goody!

Panzee · 16/02/2011 21:23

True - we're both on ABs, fortunately we're both getting better.

Atomant · 17/02/2011 20:55

Was at GP today DD has ear infection in both ears and a chest infection, on one side her lungs are really rattley.
Got some ABs which she's really not happy about taking, and she just threw up all over her cot.
The upside is her conjunctivis is clearing up!
