Congenital hip dislocation

Hi there

Just wondered if anyone else has experience of this? My little girl has a dislocated hip on one side...was put in a harness for some weeks so it didn't work and now has a small surgical procedure on Fri where they will cut sometendons to try and get hip in, and if it works then plaster for 4 weeks, back in harness again... If this doesn't work she will have to have hip surgery at 6 months to a year.
Am finding all this quite hard, very scared about her being under anaesthetic on Fri (she only 10 weeks old) and about the plaster etc. and how we will cope...

Just wanted to bump for you :)
My dd has suspected hip dysplasia but we're waiting for the hospital surgeon to see her. She turned 1 in December so we would be looking at surgery. Saying that, she walks, never limps and doesn't lean to one side just the creases are slightly off.

Just a little bit of reassurance though my dd has been under anasthetic 11 times, the first at 7 weeks. She has always been absolutely fine even with a heart defect.

Hope all goes well for your LO XX

I work as a Paediatric Physio

Have a look on www.steps-charity.org.uk as it is dedicated to Developmental Hip Dysplasia and club foot. Lots of good parent information and has a forum too.

My son needed an anaesthetic at 3 weeks old. He was absolutely fine. I gave the theatre staff one of his blankets that had been near me so when he woke up he could smell something familiar until I got to cuddle him.

Hope it all goes well Fri

Try not to worry too much about the GA, it will be a very very quick operation, and GAs are very very safe, even for young babies. Terrible strain on the heart of parents, though! (DS has had operations on and off since he was little, so I know what you're going through).

My nephew had this hip condition - and all I can tell you is that at 16 he is now in the school cricket team and as fit, active and energetic as anything.

And I agree - the STEPS forum is great and there will be lots of parents with children with hip issues, and lots of experinece to share.

Hi ss2011,

Another vote here for the STEPS website. My DD also had a dislocated hip but I was very lucky as the pavlik harnes seems to have corrected it. So I'm afraid I don't have any advice for you but just wanted to post to say I am thinking of you. I think you'll find the STEPS website helpful, there will be lots of people in your position and all sorts of tips on coping with the plaster etc. I went on there a lot when it looked as if the harness wasn't going to do the trick.
