dry cough for 3 weeks in my ds (5), since he had the flu

Ds2 (5) has had a dry cough for the last 3 weeks. He is otherwise well in himself, bright, happy and playing, eating well, etc. He does not have a temperature.

He had the flu 3 weeks ago, with a chesty cough, and high temperature, he was off preschool for 10 days to recover.

He has had the dry cough since. It sounds like he has an irritation in the throat and makes a short sharp "hark" to clear it.

He had an asthma diagnosis when he was 1 years old, but it cleared up 3 years ago, and he has not needed any inhalers since.

We have a very dustfree house, wooden floors, leather sofa, blinds instead of curtains, no nick nacks, we dont have anything "scented", so I am not sure what could be the reason why he is coughing? (He does not cough in his sleep)

Viral coughs can last for weeks, at least they seem to in our house!

As long as he's otherwise well I wouldn't worry. I usually go to the GP after 6 ish weeks, only to be told it will go soon, which it does!

I had flu in December. This cough lasted for 6 weeks, same for my mum.

Since he is a little child, I would just go the GP to get his chest listened to so that you can be sure it isn't a chest infection. It seems likely that it is just the viral cough lingering which is characteristic of the flu that has been around.

Thanks, I was hoping it was just a lingering cough after his flu, and it is reassuring that others have had it for several weeks after.

Nevertheless, I shall keep an eye on him, and take him to the doctor early this week, if not better.

DS had a flu two weeks ago with a horrid dry cough the first few days, then chesty and now it's dry again (but doesn't sound nowhere near as bad as it did at the begining of illness).

I think it's relatively common. If he's not coughing at night that's good. Give it a couple more weeks.
