anyone know about bum worms?

About a month ago, nursery told us that there had been cases of worms amongst the children. They told us what to look out for - white cotton-like threads and itching. This was around the same time that DS stopped needing nappies and, like lots of little boys, his hands are often to be found in his pants, front and back. Nice. Hmm

Anyway, he's still pooing in a potty so I've been inspecting every poo and haven't seen anything slightly wormish, so I haven't dosed him.

Yesterday when I picked him up from nursery, they told me that he's been itching and I should get him checked out for worms. Again, I've been inspecting and haven't seen anything, and I haven't seen him itching his bum.

So, should I dose him (and us) anyway? I don't particularly want to give him medicine if he doesn't need it (is it horrible?), but I don't want to be that awful family that doesn't deal with their kids' parasites!

Advice please Smile

Look at nighttime, that's when they are most active. A torch will help Wink.
Our DD had thread worms a couple of years ago, I can't remember the name of the medicine we used for her, we got it at boots. No awful side effects. Do tell him to try to keep his hands away from his mouth and change bed and towels.

do you mean when he's asleep?

The medicine is called Ovex, my Dh got totally paranoid about worms going through school after his arse itched once and bought everyone some from Boots. It cost a bomb. Much easier (and cheaper) to ask the doctor.

I would dose everyone anyway - you don't want then to increase if they ARE there ShockWink

Ovex in liquid form tastes of banana, my kids love it Smile

Make sure you dose everyone in the morning, then change all sheets and towels and nightwear. Repeat two weeks later. After changing sheets etc, hoover especially in ares around bed and play areas...and don't forget to wash teddies etc. Some people go mad damp dusting for two weeks, changing everything daily etc....but tbh I've never had a problem with just doing the initial blitz, then repeating a fortnight later. And he may not even have worms, of course.

Also, ideally, pants under PJs - or at least snug PJs - and wipe/wash bums in the morning. Nails short helps too, and lots of hand washing before meals.

Good luck!

ps I've never seen a worm on dd2, or in her poo, and have checked at night with a torch - but I"m pretty sure she had them a few weeks ago, as she woke inconsolable one night saying her bottom hurt/tickled. Could have been a fissure, or something, but I did all the above just in case - I am the Enemy of Worms Grin

Sorry OP, yes once he is asleep. the most disgusting thing I've seen was a worm worming about DDs fanjo. My poor little girl.
She was well dosed up.

right. we've all had a dose and I've shipped the kids off to my mum's overnight. BUT, I forgot about his comfort toy things that he sleeps with. I should have washed them shouldn't I?

Damn.

There's no way he'll sleep without them. If he has got worms the toys will be infested won't they?

bugger.
