Advice needed on High Temp after 3 days.

My dd has been running temperatures of 38.5 to 39.5 since Wednesday. Other symptoms are cold like and red, sore, weepy eyes.

I took her to the GP Thursday as temp was not coming down below 38.5 despite Calpol and occasional Neurofen.

The GP thinks it is just a very bad cold as she was very alert and played well and her heart was not racing. I was told to carry on with the Calpol and try and get a urine sample if the temp didn't come down.

Yesterday, it did to 36.4, but at night it started climbing again and this morning (5am) it was at 40 degrees.

She wouldn't take Calpol in the night and as it was only in the 38s I let her be. After Calpol at 5am, it has come down to 38.7 so it's working, but;

I'm worried that this is carrying on for 3 days now. Should I take her to the out of hours Dr or just carry on?

She is very alert and currently watching telly and playing, so I'd rather not sit for hrs with her in the hosp.

I'm just not sure how long is normal/safe for the a high temp. 3 days seems a lot to me. Any ideas or experiences with this.

How old is your DD?

winnybella · 12/02/2011 08:53

Fever itself is fine. Only if it was over 41 for a longer periods it could potentially be dangerous.
DCs had flu 2 weeks ago- paed told me to take DD in when fever has not abated after 5 days.

I guess it could be UTI? Maybe worth taking a sample of her pee?

Probably just a cold, though-small children can run really high temp with it.

Tokyotwist · 12/02/2011 10:10

Thank you. She's 2 and a half. I think I might take the pee sample in, just in case, but can I just drop it off at the hosp or do I need to wait until Monday an take it to the GP instead?

we've all had flu this week, DP full-blown swine flu (signed off work for a week) and the DC have had a milder version, but temps of 38+ for 3-4 days. After a dose of calpol, they were able to play for a short time.

I just had a mild cough and one day of lethargy. Just goes to show how this flu can affect different people

Tokyotwist · 12/02/2011 15:27

She's developed white sores in her mouth now, but is still quite alert and playful, if a bit (a lot) whingy bless her.

I am going to wait until Monday, unless she takes a turn for the worse. If the spots and high temp are still there, we'll ask for an emergency appointment with the GP.

White sores in the mouth are a sign of measles so keep a close eye on her. Don't mess about if you get worried.

bubbleymummy · 12/02/2011 16:26

yes, white sores are a symptom of measles as are the cold-like symptoms and the red eyes. Just keep an eye on her and maybe keep her away from other children just in case! If it is measles you will probably see a rash appearing over the next couple of days that starts behind the ears/on the face and moves downwards over the body. Have a look on the NHS/HPA website for pictures. Hope she feels better soon.

Tokyotwist · 12/02/2011 16:29

Can you still get measles if you've had the MMR?

Yes. The vaccine may not have worked. Don't panic though. Measles is usually fine in healthy children and the fact that she is playing away is a good sign! :) Vitamin A is good for treating measles so if you have apples/mangoes/carrots in the house then keep offering them. Kindervital from Floradix is a good vitamin drink with high vitamin A content or good old cod liver oil tablets! :)

Tokyotwist · 12/02/2011 16:45

I'll try not to panic and yes the fact that she's playing does make me feel much better.

Thank you

tokyo - if it is measles the white spots are called Koplik spots. They might be worth a google to see if they look like what your DD has. Some pictures are better than others...

Tokyotwist · 12/02/2011 20:28

hmmm I'm not sure they do. Her spots seem bigger and more spaced out.

However, all the symptoms seem to fit the NHS list, except the rash. She hasn't got one but then that could come later.

I've just put her to bed and will check her through the night. Temps down to 36.4 at the moment which is promising.
