My DD1 has done this a few times now - if she really really gets upset about something (has always been when overtired), she cries so hard that she struggles to catch her breath and goes blue in the face for a couple of secs.

She hadn't done it for a while but yesterday she did it for the first time in ages and it felt like the longest few seconds in the world as her eyes actually rolled to the back of her head, it was like she properly lost consciousness for a few secs and then snapped back round.

I asked a Doc about it once but she just said she'd prob grow out of it?? Has anyone experienced the same thing - I'm not sure whether to get another opinion on this as it's so scary :-(

Yes and yes DD did grow out of it at about 2. If she passes out when not crying then you need to see someone which is what the Dr told me when I took her to be checked. Be warned though that after she stopped passing out she threw up when she got upset Hmm

Please try not to worry. The doctor is right. She will grow out of it.

Agree with 5, if she ever does this when not upset then take her back but it's more common than you'd think.

Mine doesn't pass out but goes steadily a scary shade of blue round the mouth if left to cry (hence he's not left to cry!(

My DD has done this, but following a shock (like when she's fallen over) she cries and then is silent, eyes go and she goes floppy, few seconds and she's back. Its very scary and the first time we called an ambulance.

Its apparently called Pallid Breath-holding - there are a few types - its most common as you describe in a tantrum - less common as my DD experienced it. I have been reassured by dr's that she will grow out of it by at least age 5.

If it happens more often then take her back to doctors. It's horrible though, I hope she doesn't do it again!!

Thanks everyone, really useful information, really appreciate it. After not doing it for so long she did it again earlier so twice in two days - this time it was after falling over and being shocked from that. Really scary and hoping she grows out of it asap! Thanks again xx
