Baby with Cleft Lip - anyone been there?

My DS is 5 days old and sooooo adorable Grin. He was born with a tiny cleft lip. TBH DH and I don't care and don't think it;s noticeable, but know kids can be cruel growing up and don't want him being teased over something like this, so we are planning to get it corrected.

Has anyone been in the same situ - would love to just hear from a parent's point of vie.

not worried about it, but just kind of curious as to process, etc.

thanks Smile

Congratulations on the birth of your son :)

I don't have any experience with this but there is a support group here which might be of help. :)

My sister was born with a cleft lip/ palate. It was severe and corrected early on. Amazingly she has no scarring or signs of it now. I don't know if it'll be so urgent for a tiny cleft, but I do know the op is amazing in how it corrects it (if you do, I really don't know the extent).

Thanks that's great about the support group...

Cupcakes

Congratulations on your beautiful baby boy (just sneaked a look at your profile pic - he is gorgeous!)

DD had cleft lip & palate, so feel free to ask away if there is anything on your mind.

DD had lip repair at 4 months and palate at 7m, although I know some babies with cleft lip only who have had repair a bit later, if feeding / speech not likely to be affected as badly.

Have you had any contact from your local cleft team yet? We are in a different part of the country to you, but had fantastic support from specialist nurse, who explained everything to us, and we could contact any time.

DD now 3 1/2 and does look a bit different - but she had a much bigger gap than your DS. We have no nasty comments etc - only recognition and admiration from other parents who have been through the same. The difference gets less and less noticeable as she grows as well.

Enjoy the precious newborn time!

Oh didn't realise you had a pic, it really is a tiny cleft isn't it. I see what you mean about not thinking it's noticeable, I couldn't picture it before. My sister's was cleft to the nostril, much like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.gosh.nhs.uk/imagebank/images/cleft_rebecca.jpg&imgrefurl=www.gosh.nhs.uk/gosh/clinicalservices/Cleft_lip_and_palate/InformationforFamilies&usg=__5n6k4tEFPRUixWttueXwqtb7Fw0=&h=200&w=288&sz=14&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=AMueuhzggAwDnM:&tbnh=129&tbnw=186&ei=aQdXTb31FoKwhAft0-DSDA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcleft%2Blip%2Brepair%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Den%26biw%3D1262%26bih%3D577%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=629&vpy=95&dur=1721&hovh=160&hovw=230&tx=73&ty=181&oei=aQdXTb31FoKwhAft0-DSDA&page=1&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this (hers is corrected like my sister's, barely noticeable)

Hi i had a peek and he's gorgeous. my dad had a cleft repair as a child and even then (about 65 years ago) the repairs were great. I didn't know until my aunt told me as an adult! obviously things have moved on immensely since then but just wanted to reassure you

CupcakesHay · 13/02/2011 18:51

Thanks all of you. Both DH and I aren't too worried about it - and yes the specialist team have already contacted us - we were both shoced with how efficient it all seems to be.

They def seem to make some brilliant repairs - so thank you all as def feeling a lot better about it now.

And yes ducky def enjoying our precious DS - although could do without the stinky nappies Wink
