9 week old HATES tummy time

Due to a operation, I've been slow in doing tummy time with 9 week old DS. He really doesn't like it. We've been doing it every day for about 10 days, as often as possible, and although he can now lie there for a bit without crying, he won't do anything. No amount of toys, lying on floor etc can get him to move his head. The only time it worked is when I moved his head from left to right and then he moved it back.

Any suggestions? He's good on my chest so I'm not overly worried about his muscles but I'd like to see him improve.

Thanks

DS always hated it and would never do it without screaming. When he learned to roll, he would spend all day rolling from his back to his front, then crying until we put him back on his back, then rolling again.

He's now 2 and absolutely fine so I don't think it did him any lasting damage!

(The only thing we did occasionally was put him on a firm cushion, just under his tummy, so his head was over air and not smooshed into the floor. He didn't mind that so much!)

God I've never heard of it! Showing my age..

You Ds will be fine, just don't worry, you can listen to all the advise you like and read every book, but remember to do what suits you and your DS.

Don't make him do something he doesn't like, he's so young.

hello I have to agree with sneezecakesmum there are many benefits to tummy time from a developmental point of view but for babies who dont like it (and there are many) I would always try and find different positions to try this in for example lying baby on your chest whilst reclined on the sofa, placing baby on his tummy in your arms playing aeroplanes, using a rolled up towek under the chest (any babies dont like lying directly on the floor) etc.

I will try and find the link to the CSP (chartered society of physiotherapy) which has good advice on tummy time

I've had a look at the CSP thing but still think its unneccessary. I suspect the 'problem' is more with babies who are never put on the floor to learn rolling skills for themselves, but kept in car seats/bouncy chairs all the time.

They don't need to be made to practise developmental skills before they develop, surely.

I mean we don't make them have 'feet time' where we force them to stand up for 10 minutes a day before they learn to walk...

They learn things when they are ready to, if they get the opportunity.
