Does anyone know how the anaesthetic will be administered. So nervous for DS who is 10 yrs old. Will it be in the hand with magic cream or will it be the mask? When he was a toddler and a baby he had 9 anaesthetics and has some serious health problems. He was always put to sleep using the mask. . .For the child I dont like it this way as it seems tp take a long time and they get so distressed.
Can anyone advice please. So nervous for my DS.

Why don't you give the ward a ring and ask them? It's best that you are prepared and as relaxed as possible (I know it's hard!) to help your child cope.

I hope everything goes well tomorrow.

If he has GA in the back of the hand be prepared for the speed at which he goes under - DS has had them a couple of times and in the space of 3 seconds the needle goes in, their eyes role back and they are out of it.

I always burst into tears afterwards as it was just so shocking how quick it was.

Hope all goes ok for you and your DS.

Hello! Hope your DS gets on ok tomorrow.

They will probably pop some magic cream on the back of his hands before he goes down to theatre (an hour to half hour before) when he gets there they will pop on the monitors and BP cuff and at this age probably pop on an anaethesia mask. While he is having this they will put the IV in his hand and give another dose through this. He should be nicely asleep by then, give him a quick kiss goodbye and off he goes.

Ring the ward and ask them?

My dd2's has been in the back of the hand each time then the mask.

Thanks Ednurse. . . .I get so emotional about all this. Its his 10th one and it doesnt get any easier. I just hope he doesnt get upset and frightened. . . . the last one was when he was 4 yrs , so ages ago. He seems to be so so cool and not apprehensive at all. He isnt nervous in the slightest. This seems all rather strange. . .(????) If it were me at 10yrs i would be apprehensive and asking lots of questions. He just seems to think it going to be a good day off school !!!!!!!!! Bless .

Good luck for tomorrow. I would take his lead and try and relax a bit. Yes, it will be tough but hold it together until he is away then have a quiet "wobble". This is when I wish there was a hugs/holds hands smiley. It will be my turn to wobble in the summer, not looking forward to it!!

maltesers · 09/02/2011 18:04

Ah, thanks for you post. . . . Sweetiesue what is happening in the summer...an op for you , or for your child?

DS having op, first GA and feels like stepping into the unknown.

Olessaty · 10/02/2011 09:22

Good luck today. The doctor told me that even though they fight the GA with the mask, that by the time they are thrashing about they are not aware of it, it's just a natural response that children have. It was pretty difficult to watch and I admit I had a sneaky cry when my 5yo had his operation.

I think they do on the day what is least distressing and easiest, so if the children have good veins and don't get too upset, I think they use the magic cream and do it that way, but DS had his cream on and they had a look and said it would be difficult to get the line in without him getting a bit distressed (which he did for his first operation and we were keen to avoid), so we went with the mask. They did ask me what he would be better with.

sweetiesue · 10/02/2011 16:35

Hope all went well today and you are now having a much needed and deserved cuddle with your ds.

HELP you are not going to beleice this mnetters, We went for the op but frrmy poor DS would not co operate in the anaesthetic room with either the Gas mask nor the canulla in his hand . We were there for bout 20 mins,,, he cried, he fretted, saying "I really dont want to do this",, and in the end they gave up and said they would have to leave it. I am so disappointed, as it was such a build up in my mind for the operation. I just cant believe he didnt have it done. Do you think they should have held his hand and just got the needle in asap???
Dont know what to think....but i honestly thought he would go through with it. Trouble is he has vague memories of all this stuff; after 9 times beings put to sleep its not surprising.

I was so upset, and so was he . He said afterwards, "I 'm really sorry Mummy". . . .ah , so so sweet. I told him not to worry , it wasnt his fault, and i could understand his feeling of being scared.

However, i am pretty dam miffed he would nt go through with the 'being put to sleep' bit. . . . .IF ONLY !!!!!!!!!
