2 Week Old Difficult to Settle

I am b/f my 2 week old DD on demand and sometimes it's difficult to tell if she's crying because she's still hungry (even after cluster feeding) or if she's in pain. Generally she will continue to feed when offered, but then she is also sometimes sick and sometimes the milk trickles out of her nose(?).

How can I tell if she has colic or indigestion? She doesn't curl up her legs which I know is a common sign.

Also, on a separate issue, when she sneezes there is often blood mixed in with the mucus that comes out. I was told that this normal with c-section delivered babies - but I thought by now it would have cleared up...

Any advice or ideas would be most helpful. I b/f my DS for 10 months and never had any of these issues!

Thanks

You need to speak to your HV about this hun - particularly the blood coming up.

Defo speak to gp/hv about this.

I've had 3 c-s and never had any that sneezed blood, and was never advise that this could be an issue.

Milk trickling out of the nose and the sickness reminds me a little of me when i was a child and my DS3. Both of us had swallowing issues. I'm not suggesting its the same, but worth contacting gp/hv for advice.

Is she putting on weight ok?

Same here, auntevil, I had 3 c/s too (all elective so I had plenty of time to read up on it) and I've never heard of bloody nasal discharge. I've heard of wet coughing as the lungs aren't squeezed out of the birth canal, but I'm alarmed at this I must say.

Let us know how you get on please? Good luck.

I'd give one of the bfing helplines a call before speaking to your HV or GP, as they will probably be better informed regarding the milk coming from the nose:

Breastfeeding Line - 0300 330 0771
8am?10pm, seven days a week.

I'd also post this on the breast and bottle feeding section too to see if you can get someone with who has been trained or who has experience of this.

Is it a lot of blood that she has coming from her nose?

Hope the hv helps.
Re the colic etc, if it continues try infacol or dentinox or something similar - they do not enter the baby's bloodstream so they're safe for newborns to take. Tbh in my experience, my two dcs and all my friends kids have had the same issues, so I don't know whether it's just a "thing" that babies do, or of they've all had colic! It's all trial and error, but it will get easier.
