Teething at 4 years?

DS has not been himself recently and has been getting very red cheeks one or both sides. He hasn't wanted me to brush his teeth. He has a speech delay so cannot tell me what's wrong.

I have booked a dentist appointment for him but I'm not holding out much hope he will open his mouth. Could it be teething? He was pretty early getting his teeth.

Thanks x

Could he have cavaties that are sore?

Thanks for you replies. :)

Could be cavaties but he has also had very loose poos. Just like when he was teething just wondered if it could be more teeth coming early and if anyone else had experienced this.

Adult teeth hardly ever come more than 6 months early. Have you thought about the pain coming from his actual cheeks? There are lost of muscles and a few glands in them and I suppose that would be sore if you brushed? Can you see his teeth at the back?

ImeldaSnowboots · 09/02/2011 11:43

Have you checked his mouth for ulcers? Can be very sore

chuckeyegg · 09/02/2011 14:55

I can't really check his mouth he has autism and won't let me me look, not holding out much hope for the dentist.

Thanks for the advise. x

They get a last set of molars at the back before any of their front ones start to fall out IIRC - usually at around 5 or 6, but I guess it could happen earlier. Can you peek in while he's asleep?

chuckeyegg · 09/02/2011 15:11

I cut his hair already in his sleep and I've have tried looking in his mouth but no success unfortunately.

Thanks x

In case anyone ever looks at this again the reason for the problems turned out to be his sinuses! Lots of steaming sorted it out!
