Retiniblastoma - would it be detected in normal eye test?

Hi,

DD is 3 yo and has recently had an eye test and is awaiting glasses. She is long sighted in her right eye.

I have just had some photos developed and one of them shows this eye looking red but quite light red - you could almost say red but with a bit of white in the middle.

So kind of making myself paranoid about retinoblastoma here.
Would this have been picked up in a normal eye test?
Think I will take her in again but just wondering if anyone has any info.

Thanks.

Don't know, tbh. If you have any concerns, make an appointment with an ophtalmologist.

Retinoblastoma is very rare, so don't panic Smile

Phone and speak to whoever examined her eyes.

It's almost certainly a reflex from the optic nerve at the back of the eye, so don't worry yourself unnecessarily.

Should / could have been picked up in an eye test but either go to your local Eye Hospital with the photos - take loads more photos to be sure it's not just that photo. Could be the way the shot was lit or not lit so please try not to worry although that's easier said than done.

I believe it can only really be diagnosed through a thorough exam under a general anaesthetic, but if after taking more pictures and they're the same, then doctors would rather worried parents check with them.

Or do as others have advised and go back to the opticians. Most opticians will never ever see a retinoblastoma tumour apart from in their medical books, during their career but they would always know what to look for.

Good luck and hope all is okay.

Fairly sure in cases of retinoblastoma the affected eye has no red reflex at all - as a tumour blocks the redness from the back of the eye coming through, also the reflection point in the eye is slightly different.

If the optician looked at the eyes closely with a torch/checked the pressures (as am sure they will have done if measuring for glasses) am sure they will have noticed if something was wrong - opticians have a fairly low threshold for referring on to Dr's/opthamolgists any abnormal sign.

Is v good advice to speak to the optician again as they would be able to both qualify and hopefully quell your concerns x
