Blood test 'low thyroid' what does that mean?

13yo had lots of blood tests due to tiredness etc and this is what we have been told so far.

What I'm confused about is that she is really skinny - I thought that was an indicator of too much thyroid hormone, not too little?

Any experience?

There are 3 thyriod hormones test TSH, T3 and T4. If TSH is low it is indicative of overactive thyroid, which make the body speed up and can make you skinny as your body is running on overdrive constantly.

Ah I see. Thanks :)

I think they are quite worried - they've booked an appt unusually fast - so we will find out more soon.

Even if she has hypothyroid it doesn't mean that she would be overweight - in some cases it slows the metabolism enough to surpress appetite and therefore the person doesn't gain weight. Hope she's ok x

Oh right that's interesting. Confused her appetite has been low but I'm not sure if that was physical or behavioural IYSWIM.

Her whole attitude to weight etc is really worrying tbh. She's always been skinny and is now saying she's worried that the dr will give her medicine to make her fat :(

Hypothyroidism is caused by iodine deficiency. Natural thyroid supplements can help increase the hormones of the thyroid.
