Is this a very mild form of Chickenpox??

My DS is five and a half years old.

Two weeks ago he got a cold, followed by a cough and then four days later he had a very high temp. The temperature only lasted one day and he responded well to Nurofen and Calpol. That seemed to be the peak of the illness as the next few days he seemed to be on the mend - still coughing but definitely better than he was.

Then five days later he started getting some spots (bright red and raised, not a rash) on his tummy, hips, bottom and tops of his thighs. They have pretty much stayed the same for two days now, with maybe a few more appearing but it hasn't spread anywhere else - nothing on his chest, back, arms, neck or face.

Could this be mild chickenpox? I know some children only get minor symptoms, but is it usual to only get spots in one main area rather than all over the body?

He is absolutely fine in himself, no temperature and he is eating and playing as usual.

I am unsure whether to take him to the doctor as he is isn't ill and the spots aren't bothering him at all. But it would be good to know if he has it or not.

Has anyone else's child had similar symptoms?

As far as I'm aware none of the other children in his class have had it recently.

Thanks for any advice.

My 2 yr old had something a little similiar before Christmas... I kept him off day-care etc..

He had spots on his bum, groin area, above his nappy line and on his legs. Red blister looking things.

Spoke to the Dr on the phone and he thought they were chicken pox.

But they never scabbed over - they just faded slowly.... Took over a week for 1 to go and new ones kept appearing

Then about 2 weeks ago - he got them again... We tried some creams for dry skin (though it really did not look like ezcema)and they went within days. So I don't think he got it after all.

Are yours scabbing over? if so it's likely to be chickenpox.

No, they are not scabbing over yet. A few have a small white heads, but they mainly just look like angry red spots. I have no idea what is causing them.

Sounds so similiar - if it's not Chickenpox and you find out what - let me know...

My boy had them quite nicely spread apart - not in clusters...

Just an update pancakeflipper, the doc saw DS this afternoon (typically the spots have faded a bit) and he said that it could possibly have been a very mild case of chickenpox but there is no way of telling.

Failing that he said it was probably viral - isn't everything viral these days?!

Forgot to say, he recommended bathing and washing him in Diprobase for a week or so. It can be used as a cream but also as a body wash too.

Oooh this sounds familiar - DD2 had this over the weekend, took her to the Drs on Monday and the first thing they asked was has she has chickenpox? And she has which is why I had taken her in as chickenpox was my first thought. Upshot was that the dr didn't know what it was...

The spots have faded now and DD2 is fine. All very odd.

MadameCastafiore · 09/02/2011 12:19

Molloscum Contagiousum maybe?

Is the same virus as chicken pox but can take years to clear up.

Look on web - DS had chicken pox 3 times and then got this - we cleared it up in a couple of weeks with Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream.

tomatoesontoast · 09/02/2011 12:51

Dds have faded now too and haven't spread at all... did your DS itch? (my DD wasn't itchy in the slightest so am concluding that it wasn't chicken pox)

Pandsbear · 09/02/2011 19:34

The Dr said on Monday that my DD1s spots were not Molloscum Contagiousum - as I had also wondered if that was what they could have been.

Pancakeflipper · 09/02/2011 21:59

Sotiredandfedup - viral eh?? We should have had a bet on the Dr saying that..

I shall look at Molloscum Contagiousum, Never heard of it - sounds like a Harry Potter spell.
