I've been to A&E thursday and friday night with DS (sent by out of hours GP). He has a fever, coughing, vomiting, refusing feeds and coudn't stay awake. Send home with diaoralyte, renetadine (throwing up streaks of blood) and told to give him 5ml by syringe every 5 min, all he could keep down.

There's some improvement today, no temperature. I fact he scared me the other way, temp fluctuating from a low of 34.5 up to 35.8. Quite cold despite blankets/ being over-wrapped. He has woken, but cries for sleep after 10min. He's wheezing still, though blue-inhaler helps. BArely sick, just cough/ gagging up small amounts. No more diarhhea, seems constipated. Working hardly than normal breathing, chest sucking, as noted at hospital.

The things concerning me are:
-cold temperature, since last night
-effort breathing (not dramtic, but more than normal)
-persistence refusing ANY feed. Very very tired of force-feeding water. He gargles what is syringed in and blows raspberries to avoid it.

Trying to ride it out and monitor him without being a fussy mum, but I'm wondering at what point to take him to out of hours GP. Or if I should at all.

i'd be concerned about leaving a child who's clearly got laboured breathing...

i presume his oxygen levels were fine? if you press down on hos nailbeds and then release pressure, what colour are they?

it's very tiring, esp for children to breathe like that...i really do think A&E again if GP is hopeless.

did they listen to his chest? is the blue inhaler helping? hows his temp now?

strawberrycake · 07/02/2011 14:20

wheezing. No blue anywhere. Warm hands and feet.

The wheezing is a very strange one.

I've had 2 GPS in the past comment on it, as has the nurse. Yet 2 others said he doesn't.

On thursday in A&E one doctor called students over to listen to his 'bi-lateral wheeze' and the students listened and assessed it, then after the change-over the next sad he doesn't wheeze. I'm rather confused about the wheezing.

Have they done a chest x-ray?

strawberrycake · 07/02/2011 14:22

Nails do as should with colour returning. He'd be straight in if they didn't. HE seems to be functioning very well. Stats were high despite the fact he was obviously working to breathe.

winnybella · 07/02/2011 14:22

If you press on his nail- how many seconds does it take for the blood to come back?

winnybella · 07/02/2011 14:22

x-post

strawberrycake · 07/02/2011 14:22

belle- they were going to do a chest x-ray, sat around waiting for it then it was cancelled due to 'not enough information'. Really didn't get why at all.

OP posts:
belledechocchipcookie · 07/02/2011 14:23

sound like this??

strawberrycake · 07/02/2011 14:25

Sort of, but a higher whistle and some liquidy sounds gurgling too.

OP posts:
belledechocchipcookie · 07/02/2011 14:26

Not enough information means that the doctor requesting the x-ray hadn't written enough information on the form. The radiographers can only take an x-ray if it's justified, if they wrote 'cough' on the form then this isn't legally enough.

Can you take him to a different hospital? They are really not on the ball there at all.

strawberrycake · 07/02/2011 14:28

Couldn't the registrar have re-filled in the form with more info?? Seems daft to say he's having it then isn't.

Found a walk in half hour drive awa, will go when dh back.

belledechocchipcookie · 07/02/2011 14:32

Yes, the registrar should have filled in more information. They should also have taken a nose swab to test for RSV, this has the same symptoms as bronchiolitis but is infectious.
It can help to keep him propped up if you can. Feeding wise, a little often can help.

He sounds quite ill. I really hope they manage to help him. I hope you are OK, it's stressful to see your child like this.

bambiandthumper · 07/02/2011 15:23

If you want to take him to another A&E there is UCLH which has a big paeds department, and there is the Evelina Children's Hospital (nearest tubes Waterloo and Lambeth) in London.

Hope you get decent treatment soon.

Sirzy · 07/02/2011 15:23

Hope you get answers soon!

strawberrycake · 07/02/2011 17:21

He's perky up so much I feel ridiculous going A&E. Coughing but playing. Still no food though.

BUT-

GP HAS CANCELLED REFERRAL! I had appointment in march for pead but after she saw him for the emergency today she got the receptionist to phone and tell me she'd checked his notes and had seen he's already seen at another hospital. He's not! He saw a pead there once at 6 weeks then was discharged. Still sees a dietician for allergy there. Not a pead. Told receptionsit I was annoyed and he needed referral. She said she'd get back but hasn't!

belledechocchipcookie · 07/02/2011 17:30

He sounds a little better. Is he able to eat normal foods?

GP sounds very crap. Have you thought about changing?

strawberrycake · 07/02/2011 17:30

No food as of yet.

OP posts:
belledechocchipcookie · 07/02/2011 17:36

Could you try him with some finger foods?

Sirzy · 07/02/2011 17:46

Ds is always better with finger foods when his chest is bad.

Your gp sounds rubbish though! There again all of Ds referrals have been done by the hopsital.
