my youngest ds is 2.2 and since he was born has always had problems. i will try to keep it short but basically it started with noticing as soon as he was born how bunged up he was. Was assured it was normal as babies arent sucked out anymore, then noticed he would stop breathing and was also what id call a 'loud' breather. Always making odd noises. Would also snore. He barely passed any mecconium. Anyway he had chronic trapped wind, also reflux. Was then constipated and he has been off laxatives since prob just past 18 months old. Hes had various tests etc and sleep studies which showed he had sleep apnea. He had his adenoids and tonsils removed at just over 1. This did reduce the noise when sleeping and he also didnt have any apena episodes when asleep.

I was also told he 'probably' had mild floppy larynx but assured he would grow out of it. He has had biopsies taking from throat down to the colon.

The problem that i have now is that he looks fine, puts on weight ok, so the paediatricians last week were just like come back in 6 months and said he probably had infantile ibs?! There are alot of intollerances of which i avoid them all, he cant seem to digest meat, hes happy enough in the day but sleeps terribly. Goes down ok, after few hours he will be groaning and writhing around in the bed. This can happen quite often at night. He is always VERY mucusy, his nose is either running or full of bogeys. Like a permanet cold. When he breathes he sounds like a cat purring. His poos have always been full of mucus aswell. I split with the boys dad last year and im really struggling. HAving probs with ds1 aswell! the boys are always up between 5-6am.

Last night was groaning at 9.30 but went back to sleep. midnight he woke and the same thing but wouldnt settle, took him into bed with me and he slept there till 5am but he was constantly rolling around and groaning. He was asleep but VERY restless. Got next paed follow up appt in 2 weeks and im determined not to be fobbed off anymore. Does anyone have any clue what could possibly be wrong with him?!

You need to go back to your GP and demand to see a ENT. He could have allergies or his adernoids might need to come out, obviously I am not a doctor, but he needs checking poor little man.

oh, that sounds really hard on you all. You have my sympathies.

I thought allergies or intolerances too. Cow's milk protein is a common one, and can present as reflux in infancy.

But I agree with pinkdaws, I think you definitely need a referral. Do push for one - it's hard to keep badgering but I think you really should be taken seriously. Tell them about the effect it has on your and your families' life.

he had his adenoids and tonsils out when he was about 13 months.

He is intollerant to dairy among other things so he has soya. Its just so hard. I dont see how you can let a child get past 2 and still fob us off with 'he'll grow out of it'!

he sounds very nasal when he talks too. I think his speech isnt where it should be personally although the HV thinks its ok, but i guess he is still young to be worrying about that.

When i take him out people are like, oh he sounds like he has a chest infection. His chest and lungs are always clear though!

Many kids who are dairy intolerant are also soy intolerant, so I have learned this week. Has it ever been mentioned to you? Do go back to the docs and ask for that referral.

Hi Mad4...so sorry to hear you've had a hard time relationship-wise, that must be incredibly hard on top of everything else Sad

I still think there is more than just one thing going on with your little ds - ENT issues PLUS some sort of gut/allergy thing.

Re the breathing sounds, my dd totally sounded like that at his age with her floppy larynx - we used to get rushed to the front of queues for open surgeries (at GPs) because the receptionists always thought she had breathing problems/chest infections when actually she was perfectly well Grin

She also had constant colds/runny noses till she was about 4...I don't know if that was just normal toddler stuff or her larynx making it harder for her to throw respiratory tract viruses off, iyswim.

All the digestion stuff - whatever it is, allergies?? - could also cause the excess mucous though. I would maybe focus more on that side of things, because the breathing sounds may well just be his larynx - it can take a while to 'grow out' of that completely, dd is still noisy when tired/coldy even when awake. She was 4 last November.

Wishing you luck with paed follow-up...and glad to hear the sleep apnoea is sorted, at least. xx

My DS1 was always full of mucus. Constantly sounded like he had a cold. Always looked like he had infections in his nose. Anyway, the ENT tested him for allergies when he was 3 and it turned out to be our cats. We now have steroid drops for my son and that seems to keep him OK. Your DC may be a little young for these tests yet as that was inferred by the nurse who ended up doing my DS1's.
Good luck

hi elibean, long time no speak Smile

he is having some allergy tests done at the hospital on wednesday but they are only testing like 10 things and i was told that the allergy would only show up if whatever it is they testing for are in their system which isnt really going to help!
