DD weeing onto toilet seat. Odd?

Hi,

DD (2.5) has just started to use the toilet. The problem is that every now and then she sits on the seat, but the wee ends up on the seat and in front of the loo.

I'd heard of this happening to boys, but not girls.

Is this normal?

Thank you! :)

DD2 used to do that (on the seat and over the floor!). It was because she was leaning back to see what was coming out which meant the wee shot out over the front of the toilet seat!

hillyhilly · 04/02/2011 21:45

Happened to my DD in the early days, she has hefty thighs and sat with her legs pressed together - she used to end up with a puddle in her lap if she wasn't on the seat far enough or leaning forwards - she soon learned!

Elibean · 04/02/2011 22:29

Normal Smile

But annoying!

Ditto Tortoise, in dd's case.

Susiewho · 05/02/2011 20:29

Hi,

Thanks all for your reassurance.

Much appreciated! :)

Normal - get her to sit back into the loo a bit more, and to lean forwards.

Yes yes. Over the top, or in the gap between the seat and toilet (nice when it comes shooting out straight at you)

DD1 3.5 has spent the last couple of months hanging on to my hands so she can lean right forward. She's a bit bigger now, plus she's getting the hang of it (and doesn't need to look so much).

mathanxiety · 05/02/2011 20:40

Get a little clip on toilet seat -- they come with a guard in the front underneath that keeps pee inside the bowl and they also keep a child from feeling they're going to fall in, plus they're soft.

Horton · 05/02/2011 20:54

Yep, definitely normal. DD (4) still occasionally does it if she's keen to get off and get on with what she was doing before. As everyone says, get her to sit back as far as she can and lean forward. And if you leave her in there alone at all, you could always try doing what I do and sing 'bottom in the loo' to her in various silly tunes. You might feel a bit like a loon, though.

solo · 05/02/2011 20:57

My Dd does this too so I taught her to lean forward so she's basically hunched over her legs. I took her to the GP on advice from the HV and he watched her doing a wee and said it's unusual and to 'keep an eye and if no change by January, go back'. Well, I'm not sure what change he was expecting to occur within a few months, and of course there has been none, so will be taking her back soon...
She wasn't looking, it's just when she sits upright on the seat, it shoots out between the seat and the china. When I had to stop on the motorway layby last summer, and had to hold her up (swing style), she was weeing 3 - 4 feet away!!! such gusto!
Glad to see she's not the only one.

McGinger · 05/02/2011 21:01

Same here, so it looks like it is normal. I have seen us changing wee covered trousers in the past!

DD is 3, I have taught her to sit back on the toilet, open her legs wide and lean forward, that seems to have fixed it!

lukewarmmama · 05/02/2011 21:16

solo - really, a trip to the GP? I'd be interested to hear what he has to say when you go back, as DD is the same. I can't imagine what problem it could possibly be, apart from a very powerful pelvic floor (wish I could say the same!).

solo · 05/02/2011 22:06

Tbh lukewarm and McG, I assumed it was not normal being as the torrent 'flow' was so powerful and straight ahead. Even the HV was a bit taken aback, hence the GP visit on her recommendation. Dd just happened to need a wee as we walked down the corridor and into his office and of course, she was very vocal at 3.10yo and he suggested we all traipse to the loo and he have a look...must've looked hilarious the three of us just popping to the loo together though!

I must make an appointment with him to follow it up, though I haven't actually looked to see if it's still a problem; I'm not that keen to have a puddle of pee everywhere even if I'm prepared and have stripped her off first.

FlamingoBingo · 05/02/2011 22:29

Solo - you took her to the GP cos she weed on the toilet seat!? Confused

OP - I've got four daughters. It really is completely normal. Children often seem to manage to hold in a huge amount of wee so that when they go, it comes out really fast. They have no pubic hair to 'channel' it; and they are too little to sit on the loo properly. Sorry to be patronising, but it's not rocket science. Just make sure they're sitting far enough back on the loo and leaning forwards, not backwards. Or get a special toilet seat. Or keep them using potties until they're big enough to do it properly.

But all mine managed it very small once we taught them how to sit properly.

solo · 06/02/2011 02:19

No FB, I took her because the HV advised me to get her checked out. I took her because I wanted to make sure that she was physically Ok because emotionally she had been getting upset by the fact that she was weeing 4 feet ahead of herself. I don't think that is an unreasonable thing to do. You have 4 Dd's; I have one. Maybe you are better at Mothering a girl than I am ~ I don't know, but I do know that I can only do what I think best for my own Dc's. And yes, I'm still learning.

mathanxiety · 06/02/2011 21:37

I can't believe the silly doctor being flummoxed by it either. Or the HV. Did neither of them ever have peeing competitions when they were 4 or 5?

CointreauVersial · 06/02/2011 21:39

Not odd, no. DD1 was the same. Very irritating!

Susiewho · 06/02/2011 21:40

Thanks all for your replies.

It's good to know that DD is normal. In that respect, at least! :)

solo · 06/02/2011 23:09

Well the silly doctor is very good and I trust that he knows what he's doing. My wee never shot forward so I never had peeing competitions Hmm I will be letting my GP guide me I think :)

mathanxiety · 07/02/2011 01:39

Whether it shoots forward or downwards depend entirely on what direction the bottom is pointed, for girls. Maybe your doctor is a man and hasn't devoted much thought to ishoos related to toilet design and the fact that small girls often don't sit back far enough or lean forward when they pee.

solo · 07/02/2011 13:03

Don't know, but it never happened to me and none of my friends with young girls have had this 'problem' if you want to call it that. I don't think it's a problem per sé, but it is certainly messy at times and upsetting for Dd.

mathanxiety · 07/02/2011 15:00

The little clip-on children's toilet seats that have a guard at the front, inside the loo, are very useful in preventing this, and also keeping children from falling into the loo, or getting afraid of falling in.

solo · 07/02/2011 15:16

I have one math, but it brings Dd's legs and bottom out in a rash where it touches. Also, although she is only just 4yo, she is big for her age, so probably wouldn't even fit on one of those seats anymore. We'll manage.

cakeywakey · 07/02/2011 15:18

We have toilet seat inserts and my DD even manages to pee over these! Totally normal and a complete PITA.
