Iron supplements for 10 month old - side effects?

HI there,
I've been giving my DD2 (10 momths) Wellkid vitamin drops for the last couple of weeks - as they contain Iron and Omega 3.

This is because she's exclusively breastfed (won't take a bottle or formula in any form), and not a huge eater, and, TBH my HV put the fear of God into me last time I saw her about breastfed babies not getting enough iron and developmental delays etc. Now I'm back at work and she's obviously not having any milk in the day while at nursery, I figured supplementing might be more necessary and have become more regular about giving them to her.

Thing is, she seems to now have completely stopped eating and has a runny bum? (She's up all night wanting to BF (unlike her, she's always slept well) but I don't have much milk at night having not fed this much for months?). I've read that iron can cause nausea and diarrhoea in adults, but can the amount she's having in these drops be causing problems, and are infants susceptible these side effects do you know? I also remember having a horrible taste in my mouth when I had to take Iron supplements after having had both DDs, and it putting me right off eating???

She might, of course, simply be teething, but she's just finished cutting her two front teeth and manage to eat reasonably (for her) and sleep ok (if Calpol-ed) during that despite being in a bit of pain...

I'm thinking of stopping the supplements for a while to see if things improve, but thought I'd ask if anyone hear had any knowledge /experience of this here to see if I'm barking up the wrong tree? And of course, while I'm not giving her the supplements I'll be fretting about her Iron levels and my 'substandard' milk Grin.

Any pearls of wisdom lovely ladies?
Thanks in hope,

db

watching with interest.

my dd is breastfed and chatting to a friend she told me that when her dd was born a few years ago (2008) bf babies were given iron and vitamin drops as routine by hv (this was stopped, apparently as it gave the impression that breast isn't best). Anyway, i too got v concerned about iron deficiency so upping red meat/lentil/brocolli meals etc. thankfully dd a good eater. sorry i can't offer any practical advice but hopefully an experienced mum will come along to help x

hi my son now 15 months was on iron supplement in a liquid form- he was on it for 3 months and it made him miserable. he got tummy ache, sloppy green poo, was off his food. he was found to be anaemic at 9 weeks old-however the hospital failed to inform me until he was 6 months old by which time he was very very anaemic(breast fed). he has had another blood test today and is about to start on another 3 month course of iron-poor lad.
i dont know much about other supplements etc but his was purely an iron supplement- he has had a tonic that i purchased from boots which had iron init and that did not upset his tummy.
he is very pale and tired-unforntualty he has a poor appetite now but i do try to give him iron rich foods (when he eats)

Thanks all?
enimod - that's it, runny green poo, seemingly a tummy ache (she usually sleeps on her tummy and now won;t) and not eating. Farting like a trooper to Blush.

I've stopped them, I reckon it's a least part of the problem. Let's see what happens.

Giving iron supplement which stop her from eating her green veggies, red meat and lentils seems a bit pointless? Confused

thats exactly my thinking too! have a look out for the tonic instead- for short term use- i actually use it for my 4 year old who goes off food and loses weight easily, the tonic seems to help him.

Enimod - is it Spatone? Heard of that before - any idea why it's different?
