Possible Gum boil in 20 month old dd - previous bad injury to tooth?

Hi, in September my poor dd had a horrible accident involving her front teeth. Her front tooth was knocked backwards and she had significant gum and bone damage. She also had a terrible infection in the gum. We saw a facial consultant as they thought she may need an op as her bone holding her front teeth had broken. He said it would heal on its own and the front tooth would come out on its own and no need to operate.

Over time the tooth and gum has healed and is still there (we are not holding our breath). Tonight while brushing her teeth she had a tiny bit of bleeding. After brushing I looked and saw a tiny boil above the bad tooth. Do we need to go back to the dentist do you think? She doesn't seem in pain but I really don't know how long its been there. We have an appointment for a check up 2 weeks on Monday can it wait or will she need anti-biotics? Sorry for long post....

I would definitely take DD to the dentist. It sounds like an infection around the root of the tooth, probably where some bacteria has got into the biological zone. Antibiotics will probably be given and she might need a procedure to save the tooth.

Don't worry too much. Antibiotics dont really hit the spot for this sort of infection, the tooth would need to be treated for the infection to go away. This would be a root canal treatment in an adult, I don't treat children routinely so I'm not certain how I would treat this to be honest. The tooth has got another four years to go so I would have to think long and hard about removing it but if left, the infection could damage the adult tooth.

Your dentist will be able to advise best but hope it's all ok and that you are bringing dd up to not be afraid of the dentist!!

Hi, went to the dentist this morning. She said the gumboil is acting as a natural drain and to just leave it. The tooth is quite wobbly from previous injury so it will fall out on its own. She would need GA to take tooth out and she said if dd were hers she'd just leave it. Thanks so much for replies...
