She's bouncing on the sofa now Hmm

DP will be like Hmm when he gets here (mind you, I didn't ask him to come back, it was his idea)

She's trying to whack her brother- she'll be ok, I dare say.

Lol - it's amazing how quickly they bounce back. I know it's hard but try to keep her relatively calm if you can because she still is sick and she could tire herself out - the paracetemol is kind of giving her a false sense of wellness iykwim! Maybe a dvd or something just to get her sitting at least! :)

hope she is sleeping peacefully now and fever is under control. just thought i would mention that my ds1 has had a fever hitting 41 many times, each time with tonsillitis (and around 40 with his numerous ear infections). so although it does sound like the flu your ds had, it is worth bearing in mind that there could possibly be some other infection going on if you find the fever continuing. good luck Smile

She's sleeping on my bed now, I'll join her in a few minutes.

I gave paracetamol at 5 and it took a good hour and a half for the fever to come down, though not completely. Then at 9 it started to raise again so gave hersome ibuprofen and again, it's just now that she's feeling cooler and breathing slower. (I'm one hour ahead of the UK).

Weird, normally it takes only about 30 minutes Confused

I think that with flu it sometimes takes 1 hour before the medication starts really lowering the fever. I would alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen and make a schedule. In my experience fever often peaks during the night between 03.00h-06.00h, so I would definitely set an alarm clock and check her during the night (do you have an ear thermometer, they usually keep sleeping whilst you use it). Even if she is asleep, if she has 39.5 or more I would wake her up and give her medicine during the night. Fever can go up to 41 degrees Celsius (dd had it when she had pneumonia), between 41 and 42 it becomes dangerous and apparently the brain has a special system which prevents fever normally going above 41 ... but it does mean that you have to trust that it is all working as it is supposed to work. I found it terrifying when dd had 41 degrees and nothing brought it down - GPs were very relaxed about it (but they were wrong she had severe pneumonia). So keep a close eye on her, if she doesn't drink sufficiently (e.g doesn't wee often enough) or has difficulty breathing (drawing in at ribs or bluish skin tone/lips or anything else making you worried then call doctor or take to A&E/ambulance). Also, if they have period of high fever (several days) then fever disappears (several days) and then fever comes back - get it checked out as it may indicate secondary infection which after having had flu is often bacterial and needs proper treatment with anti-biotics (as it can be tonsillitis/pneumonia/ear infection etc.). Good luck and hope she gets better soon.

Thank you, dikkertjedap.

One thing that is worrying me is that she doesn't really have any other symptoms aprt from fever.

I thought she got the flu/unspecified virus off DS, but he had a dry cough. She doesn't. I did some MN search and it seems fever without any known cause should be investigated promptly.

Crap. I will call the doctor first thing in the morning, but should I be going to A&E?

If she is breathing okay and has been weeing today and if you can reasonably control the fever (i.e. you can get it down to below 40 with medication) I would wait till tomorrow. However, if you feel really worried then follow your own feelings (wished I did that, we ended up with emergency as I kept listening to GPs who told me not to worry). Also you may want to try to catch some wee so they can check for urinary tract infection. Also, could she be having an ear infection? As this could also cause very high temperature, same for tonsillitis (very read sore throat, swollen tonsils, with or without white spots/threads). Hope she gets better soon.

winnybella · 03/02/2011 22:51

Well, after she woke up with over 40 degrees fever after her nap in the afternoon, she had a couple of biscuits and drank some juice and water and had a good breastfeed.

Breathing quite fast but slows down as meds start working, so I guess it's in response to fever.

She was ok/chirpy for an hour or 2 when the temp went down, but it started going up again and she was all tired, siitng on the sofa, not moving really. At the same time it seemed more like just fever making her like that- don't know how to explain it.

Will check on her now, as I left her for an hour and a half to sleep.

It's just so hard to know when it's just a relatively benign virus and something horrible like meningitis etc.

Well she woke up last night at 1 or so, went to stay with DP on the sofa, had some baguette and butter and juice and milk, came back to me, we both slept in late today, her temp is 38.6 (but last paracetamol was 10 hours ago) and her nose is blocked a bit and she coughs a bit, so I guess it's just what DS had.

Thanks all, I might have panicked a bit yesterday Blush

I called the doctor and she said that fever flunctuation is not uncommon with the flu (both DS and DD had it one day on, one day off)and said to wait a few more days.

Phew.
