newborn with conjunctivitis

Has anyone experienced this? My toddler has conjunctivitis and has now passed it onto my 4 day old Sad. Have tried so hard to not let this happen and now she's woken up with very sticky eyes, and redness inside. Have phoned GP and have an appointment, but it's for later this afternoon and I'm going crazy with worry! Is the likelihood that she'll be ok, or could this really quickly damage her eyes? Thanks.

We had to take our 7 day old DS to paed with conjunctivitis. I feel for you - it's so upsetting! The last thing you need. We were given some drops, which were difficult to administer as his eyes weren't really open. But he got better. We also cleaned his eyes with saline solution/cotton pads. You can get saline solution ampoules from the chemist.

Best of luck - in a few days it will all be better, just have to be careful with re-infection.

Do you have any breast milk? I was advised to use that.

BlackSwan · 01/02/2011 13:24

greentig3r - you won't find any opthalmologists suggesting that. Midwives tale.

Thank you for the replies. I do feel like the worse mummy in the world right now Sad Have literally washed and scrubbed everything now!

I agree with greentig3r - breastmilk squirted directly into the eye.

Clean eye first with saline solution or even some cold tea, the squirt breastmilk directly into eye.

Please don't put breast milk in the baby's eye! It's not hygenic or helpful. Such an old wives tale. You need medicated drops.

notnowbernard · 01/02/2011 14:26

I've used breast milk before and it's worked

I've also used it my other DC and it didn't work

So not always a guarantee but I'm sure it's not "unhygienic or unhealthy" Confused

Breastmilk is magic stuff. I used on my ds and cleared up by the next day. Supposedly it's also good for nappy rash and stuffy nosesHmm

Breastmilk didn't do anything for DS's cjtis. Salt water and cotton wool is what finally did the trick.
Breastmilk has loads of great antibacterial qualities, Blackswan, it even kills cancer cells (weird but true!). They dont' like to prescribe the medicated drops for newborns, ime. So worth trying the other remedies first.

Thanks everyone. Dr prescribed eyedrops and told me to continue bathing with salt water and cotton wool. She's looking SO much better already Smile
