Ears full of wax

My four year old has suffered with too much wax in her ears since last summer.

She has an ear infection (her first) and since then both ears have been clogged with wax.

We have tried oil, warm oil and bicarbonate of soda drops.

Just taken her back to the docs and he has referred her to ENT.

She doesn't always hear me and shouts when she talks. Despite me explaining to nursery about her ears she is constantly being told off for shouting.

Can you offer any advice?

Thanks

Hi there,

Our DD has been referrd for the same problem and we have literally just been to our ENT/hearing test appointment this morning.

She is 2.9 and before Christmas, October time I think, I took her to the GP as she had lots of wax. He prescribed the sodium bicarbonate ear drops which we used every day for a couple of months.

She does shout a bit but the hearing test this morning has been all clear and now we need some speech therapy. Luckily the drops seem to have cleared the wax. If the drops hadn't have worked we would have had to have had some suction to remove it.

Have you been given any indication as to how long you will have to wait for your ENT?

In the meantime, keep going with the drops and cotton wool, it really does work after a good few weeks.

Keep going with the drops, so that the wax will be easier to remove when the ENT appt comes through.

Dd had to have wax removed at ENT when she was in Reception. The first time we went they couldnt do the tests becausd of the earwax, despite two weeks of oil drops. So we had another appt a few weeks later and used the bicarb drops until then.

At the next appt she lay on a couch with me standing next to her. There were posters on the ceiling for her to look at. The dr put a little metal funnel in her ear and ferreted about with various implements through it. He had to use suction, which was noisy (according to dd), but not painful. He extracted a 1.5cm long, twisted plug of hard black wax from one ear, and plenty of smaller, softer, paler lumps from the other ear.

It was puzzling for dd, but not at all painful or frightenIng.

Afterwards she as able to do the hearing tests, which she enjoyed.

Thank you both. I have been using the sodium bicarbonate for quite a while with no effect.

Please can you tell me how you are applying the drops and how often?

I was told to put one drop in each ear at night and gently massage the ear. I haven't used cotton wool?

Her speech is fine for her age, just loud. Would love to see a long lump of wax come out of her ear! I look in her ear with a torch and both are completely blocked.

Try using Otex ear drops - probably a bit 'stronger' than sodium bicarbonate drops.

We used about 2-4 drops 4 times a day. Massage the back of the ear and plug the ear with cotton wool afterwards to prevent it coming back out again. Remove cotton wool after about half hour. You will notice that there will be wax coming out quite easily after only a few goes. No need to attempt to clean the ear as it will come out onto the cotton wool. By the sounds of it you definitely need to be using it more often.
