Knocks to the head

Hi,I am so worried about my 5 year old he is always falling over or knocking his head. Two weeks ago he fell over and had a golf ball bruise on his forehead and today walked into something and now has another one in the same spot. When he was younger he had two bumps in one day one in the front and back of his head. Im wondering if its pure clumsiness or something else :-(

Cherry

I am sorry your little one is having so many bumps and bruises.

Firstly, bumps on the forehead often come up as big golf balls, so do not panic too much. The skull is relatively thick there if that is any comfort (a bump on the temple is more scary).

Secondly, this is probably normal and he is just an active 5 year old. However, if you are concerned that there may be something underlying it, the simplest thing to check is an eye test to see if he needs glasses.

The other problem which is common is dyspraxia, which is a posh name for clumsiness. Signs might include general messiness, for example eating, writing, colouring or painting and also poor organisation skills, so difficulty in dressing (putting things on the wrong way round, shoes on the wrong feet etc) and poor left-right orientation.

There is more information here , which is a link to the Dyspraxia Foundation.

I hope that helps.

Hi Jaybird, thankyou for your reply you have put my mind at rest :-)He doesn't have problems with getting dressed or anything else maybe it is just cluminess but I will be taking to my GP on Monday for a chat and to get his eyes tested. It just seems that every other week he has a huge bump and it really worries me more when it's on the same spot. Thanks again.

big bumps look awful but are not usually the one 's to be worried about. If they bump their head and subsequently vomit or go drowsy (any change in consciousness or confusion) then go to A&E
