My son has been ill with "flu" since before christmas...fever, sweats, cough, weakness etc...some days he was not as bad...took to GP 2 weeks ago as he was covered in a rash and his hands were swollen said it was a chets infection and prescibed anti biotics...did not improve so took him again yesterdady - was sent to hospital for chest x ray and pneumonia was confirmed. He is at home on another higher dose antibiotis and we expect him to improve over next couple of days anyone been thru this? are there any complications I should look out for?...how long will he take to fully recover he has lost a stoone in weight was only 61/2 to start

My DD had pneumonia three times while she was a baby. She is 9.8 now and hasn't had any residual problems.

I had pneumonia twice when I was roughly that age. Basically, antiobiotics kicked in quickly, but I was left very tired and weak for weeks afterwards. I did a staggered return to school, coming in half days at first. Have also had a couple of bouts of pleurisy as an adult. Find the antiobiotics work, but you end up tired. Be nice to him!

DD has just had pneumonia. It was very severe so she needed to be admitted to hospital on oxygen and anti-biotics drips. After that she was for a further 10 days on oral anti-biotics. She has now been of anti-biotics for two weeks, she is still totally exhausted. Just going to the post office means she falls asleep in the car on the way back. I had planned for her to go back to school mornings only next week, but TBH don't think she will manage. Hospital said that it can take months before they fully recover and you will not know if there is any permanent damage for about a year or so according to hospital paediatrician. Hope he feels a bit better.
