DD and urinary symptoms plus tummy pain

I've phoned GP already to see if I could get her in tomorrow but need to phone at 8.15am for the release of 'on the day' appointments.

In the meantime, does this sound like a UTI to you?

It does and it doesn't to me...

All DC are under the weather. DS2 has inflamed tonsils, fever and a bit of diarrhoea yesterday but only one bout. DS1 has a headache but seems okay otherwise. There are certainly a few bugs flying round their school. DD, however, keeps saying she feels 'unwell' Hmm and is complaining of tummy pain under the ribs sort of to the sides, needing to wee a lot and also feeling she needs to wee when she doesn't.

No pain on urinating or anything like that but she is going to the toilet "all the time and only doing a little bit" as she put it.

She is 11, so I am less clear on the detail as I might be with one of my younger ones but this is what she has told me.

It does sound a bit like a UTI but a bit more going on which may or not be related to the urinary signs.

Has she been drinking any more than normal? The only reason I ask ( and I don't want to worry you & I'm definitely not really qualified to advise) is that my son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last summer completely unexpectedly.
He was showing signs of what I thought was a UTI - weeing lots over a day but then that night going lots but only passing a dribble. I hadnt really noticed that he was actually drinking more than normal but had put it down to summer weather.
Since then I have spent lots of time on email discussion groups for diabetic children & have learnt that some children present with urinary signs but also tummy pains so I didnt want to let your post pass without a mention of it. Feel slightly silly even mentioning it!
However I'm sure it is very unlikely & a UTI or some other bug is far more likely. I'm sure your GP will check for glucose or ketones in a urine sample.
If she starts vomiting definitely get her checked.
Hope all gets sorted & it is something straightforward.

Thanks kp I have worried a little at the back of my mind about diabetes as my friend's daughter was diagnosed about 3 years ago at a similar age and had simialr unrinary symptoms - plus the asscoiated aggression. Not really aggressive in my DD but definite surly tone which I'd put doen to hormones but could be a sign...

You are right that GP may well look for ketones. I used to have some strips somewhere.

I'm just surprised that she doesn't have a fever and isn;t more unwell if it is a UTI, with burning wee too as I'd expect!

Sorry didn't want to worry you & realise I am coming at it from a somewhat skewed perspective! But have heard some horrendous sories of missed diagnoses & very sick children in diabetic ketoacidosis as a result so just wanted to flag it up as a possibility ( albeit probably very unlikely possibility).
Don't know about the surliness but as you say may just be that age & hormones!
DS urinary symptoms weren't quite what I expected with regard to diabetes and was convinced we would be heading home with antibiotics for UTI so was definitely a shock for us but looking back the drinking was pretty obvious.

I'm sure the GP will check it all out tomorrow & I'm sure if you mention it as a concern they will dip the urine. Hope it is something simple.
