hiya, i have a little girl who is 3 and a half, she has always been smaller than average height and weight since she was born. She was quite ill over the christmas and has had on and off colds since. she weighed just over 2 and a half stone before christmas. Over this time i could feel her loseing weight. Family and friends also commented on how light she has got without me saying anything. she got weighed again on last monday and she weighed just under 2 and a half stone. i weighed her again on wednesday and she'd lost 3lbs and then weighed her again this morning and shes lost another 3lbs. The doctor doesnt seem that concerned over it but im worried sick, can someone please help, abit of advice or something please.

Sorry to hear your DD is not well. Ask to get her tested for diabetes - losing weight is a key symptom in children.

If your GP is not paying attention, see another or ask your health visitor for advice. They ought to recognise your concerns and run some routine tests, to put your mind at rest if nothing else. Don't be put off by inattentive doctors - keep pushing until you are satisfied that your DD is ok.

im keeping a food diary of everything she eats, although they havent asked me to do it. and have set up another appointment with a different doctor for friday. She has a really good appetite, and to be honest probably eats more than most children her age, i really hope they do something because im so worried.

If you can, try taking a urine sample with you to your next appointment, that way they might do a dip-stick test for glucose (symptom of diabetes) there and then.

Good for you for seeing another doctor. Hopefully you will have a much better experience this time and get some answers.

I decided not to wait and took her to the doctors today, they weighed her again and are saying she weighs the same as before. i know she has lost weight and on 2 different scales it shows that she has. All they have said is bring her back in a month and thats it. I am so frustrated that they seem to not be taking any notice. asked them to do some tests on her and was told that there was no need and that they will do it next time shes in and check her weight then. in the mean time i am off out to go and buy some new scales just to prove a point. Dont know what to do now......

I feel for you I really do. Especially because of doctors sending you away everytime. Are you telling me that if it was their child they would wait another month before they did a simple test like diabetes?
My point is not to infuriate you even more because it's not going to help anyone, but I would just go and see a different doctor (I recently saw 4 different doctors about my son as I didn't trust any of their diagnosis, and I don't care what they think to be honest).
Go and see a different one, and say "Please, I am really really worried, could you run a diabetes test (or a full blood count even) even if it's just to put my mind at rest? ". You have nothing to lose by insisting.
Maybe she just lost weight because of the illnesses though, it doesn't take many days of not eating for them to lose weight does it
?
But just for your peace of mind, I would insist.

Just thought, you can buy urine sticks to test for glucose at the chemist. Ask the pharmacist. Do it a few times, early morning, an hour/2 hours after food, etc.

Hope you get somewhere with another doctor or HV.
