15-20 poos a day!

My 8mo has been filling 15-20 nappies a day for the last 2 and a half weeks. It seemed to follow a short bout of vomiting and gave her really painful nappy rash.

The gp gave her Clotrimazole for a yeast infection causing the nappy rash and sent a stool sample off. However, I got the impression from the gp's receptionist that the results of this are negative. We're going back to see a different gp this morning as the rash has improved but isn't getting a chance to disappear and I'm still not happy with the constant pooing.

So, I suppose I'm wondering whether this is just normal teething or something more. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would definitely want to know the results of the sample- Doctor's receptionists don't know anything apart from everyone else's business! Get a conclusive answer from your GP. She might have been unlucky enough to pick up a bug which has destroyed the natural balance of the flora in her gut, hence the yeast infection- ask your GP about this and see if he thinks it might be a factor and if he can recommend anything.

Agreed, I would ensure you get the results, return to the surgery and find out what is happening next - doesn't mean there is something to worry about but I've never heard of that much poop in a day, so I think it totally warrants further investigation.

Thanks for your replies, unfortunately I'd already been to the gp before I had a chance to read them.

Her results were negative for any bacterial infection so we got the old viral infection line, this may be true actually as she's got a bit of a cough and runny nose. However, if it hasn't improved in a week he wants to see her again and she will be referred to paediatrics.

Got some more cream for her nappy rash too.

Thanks again :)

Missallen - your poor son, is his dr happy to leave him for now? My gp will refer her next week to the hospital though she did have bowel problems at birth.
