baby has croup, will he be more susceptible to it in the future?

My just-turned-one-year baby had croup this weekend. It was a bit scary listening to him wheeze and bark, even though he had it mild enough for the doctor not to give him steroids. My daughter, 4 years, has never had anything like this, so I know nothing about croup.
Are some children more susceptible to it? If he's had it once does that mean chances are that he'll have it again? We have no allergies/asthma/eczema in our family generally. I'd be grateful for your thoughts.

My daughter is three now, she gets it about twice a year, first couple of times really bad, hospital job and I was terrified Sad

I was given steroids for home, my tips would be a steamy room, (shower running really hot), or a walk outside in the cold. Trip to hospital if really bad, DD went on nebulizer and it stopped within minutes.

I think they do grow out of it eventually, its very common, but scary all the same.

xx

yes, IME some children are particularly susceptible

most of the time you can "treat" it with steam, but obviously see a doctor if you feel it's getting too bad.

ds2 gets it a lot, though fairly mild so thankfully we've never had to go to hospital or anything

DD had it once, bad enough for hospital trip and it took a while to get under control. But, that was a year ago (she had just turned one) and she has not had it since. So having it once does not necessarily mean he will have it again. But most people I talk to seem to have it regularly or not at all - I think we are the exception rather than the rule!

Thanks all! He is a bit better now but has a streaming cold instead - makes it really tricky for him to breastfeed and breathe at the same time, poor love.
At least now I know what croup sounds like, and won't be so alarmed next time.

Hiya

DS has had a couple of bouts of croup. First time I was petrified (DD never had it). Second time and I'd bought a humidifier and put it straight on in his room. Seemed to do the trick.
We've had a couple of threatening croup visits since but seemed to have nipped in the bud very quickly - as soon as the barking cough has come on and the humidifier follows.

So far, so good...

Needless to say, I recommend getting a humidifier!

sussexmumoftwo · 26/01/2011 11:17

Agree with Moosky on this one - DS1 had it 3 times as a baby and the first time I was terrified - it sounds awful - was ready to charge off to A & E in wee small hours.

DD1 had it and by then had heard about humidifiers - it seemed to cure the laboured breathing and barking sounds. Much easier than trying to get exhausted toddler into a steamy bathroom at midnight. They seem to work for coughs and colds too - we have got one that you can add Olbas or Karvol to.

No lasting damage to either of them - not an allergy in sight - think it's just one of those nasty viruses that disappear as they get older.

Thanks Moosky and Sussexmum.
Only vague worry I have about humidifiers is that our house is a bugger for condensation already and the thought of adding humidity makes me worry about dampness. But obviously Ds's health comes first and it wouldn't be often - touch wood!!

they can still get it up to age about 9 so don't be surprised if years and years later he gets something that sounds suspiciously familiar. ds has only had about 4 attacks of croup, but one was when he was 7

ilovesprouts · 26/01/2011 22:53

my ds2 has croup every year this is one of the worst hes had today coughing all the time going really red in the face etc

bebespain · 27/01/2011 22:11

DS2 had it when he was very young, 5 months. We ended up in Hospital as he had bad stridor. He was given a steroid medicine and was much better after a few days, although the cough lingered for a while.
I am pleased to say he is now 20 months and hasn´t had it since, although I was told at the time that he may well have future episodes.
DS1 never had it and I knew nothing about it either. It was very frightening

linspins · 28/01/2011 20:59

Hey Ilovesprouts, hope your little one is a bit better today. My babe is fed up now of me wiping his nose, he's learnt what I'm up to as I approach him with a tissue, and hides his head! His breathing is still a bit noisy due to the cold when he's awake but he is sleeping more quietly..
