Dd (4) has been complaining of a poorly belly for some time, at home and nursery. Comes and goes a lot, predominantly in the top of her stomach under her diagphragm, particularly at night.

The last 3 weekends she's had severe abdo pain and vomting, lost lots of weight, can't keep anything down for 24+ hours then it resolves itself. Last weekend went to A+E, no help really.

Today have taken her to GPs and now she's going for blood tests. Would anyone have an idea what they're for? Have a reasonable amount of medical knowledge and understand basic human physiology if anyone would be able to explain it. She's very very pale and tired. Am worried it could be appendicitis (Dad nearly died from this), or something even more sinister. Sad

Have ruled out gastroenteritis, esp as none of the rest of us have had it and no on else at nursery has a stomach bug. Stools ok but soemtimes quite pale and smelly. Blockage? coeliac? Crohns?

Daren't google in case I find something that scares me Sad.

I would ring and ask your surgery what the tests are for if they didn't actually tell you but as it comes and goes my best guess is that they are checking for malabsorption of food possibly as a result of coeliac disease. hope someone comes along with better advice, but try not to worry.

Could be coeliac (which can cause temp. lactose intolerance) Worse thing you can dfo is remove wheat/gluten from her diet though - to be tested you need to be eating a resonable amount for 6 weeks before the test.

Hope you get answers soon

Don't google it, that's always the most terrifying thing to do. I hope you get your answers soon & poor little DD feels better.

Forgot what I was going to say in the first place, which is I doubt very much its appendicitis as I understand that comes on suddenly & is of a short duration - not 3 weeks on & off. if you see what I mean.

Don't add or remove anything from her diet without medical advice. Especially if she is undergoing tests, you could end up with a false result. And keep off the internt, you'll drive yourself mad reading what could be wrong.

I kept a diary everal years ago of when the pain/sickness/bloating happened. It really helped to build up a pattern/picture for the Doctor.

Thankyou v much for all your kind posts and advice.

Dh has had a complete rigmarole this pm trying to get her these blood tests which the GP started doing then gave up because she thought it would be better if a phlebotomist in a clinic miles away would be better doing. Who was then unavailable due to community visits who advised us to go to childrens out-patients at a hospital in the opposite direction who then refused as it wasn't their trust on the blood form and the GP hadn't filled in which tests she wanted doing. Angry Angry Angry

Poor dd is at the A+E waiting for the emla cream to work. They've ruled out anything acute and think it's probably to do with a chronic condition. She will probably need a drip and an overnight stay as she need observing and rehydrating. Sad Sad Sad.

I have been at home looking after ds 16m all day. Am going to have to arrange babysitter for an hour or so to go down to pead ward to take over from DH.

You wouldn't think I live between 2 massive teaching hospitals with all this palaver would you? And that I work for one of them!!
