nosebleed and now vomitting

Hi just a quick question.

Ds (16 months) fell face first onto a bottom stair this afternoon whilst at a birthday party and had a nosebleed that stopped after about 10 mins. He then seemed to recover ok, although running about more carefully.

However he has just had 2 episodes of vomiting and I am trying to work out whether if its just a case of too much party food and running round or if I should be concerned the two incidents are related.

Any thoughts? Should I run the gauntlet of nhs direct?

i think they say more than one episode of vomiting after a 'head injury' and you should seek advice.

is he a sickish kind of kid iyswim?

Clunge · 23/01/2011 23:19

I'd take him to A&E just to be on the safe side. One lot of vomiting after a head injury is worrying, any more and it needs checking out.

hogshead · 23/01/2011 23:20

No this is the first time since weaning. I can't think that he has ever been properly sick before (not including baby sick iyswim)

He is a bit unsettled too

He must have gone with some force for his nose to bleed, let alone for upto 10 mins. Poor mite x

hogshead · 23/01/2011 23:23

It was one heck of a thump - total accident he rickerted (?sp) off another toddler and landed face first :(

Hi Hogshead

Does he seem drowsy?

Think I would take him to local A&E to get him checked out. When dd fell when she was 6 months, the advice we were given was that sometimes falls in children do cause vomiting, but that if she did vomit more than once or seemed drowy or unsettled, to bring her back to get checked out.

It's awful when they are so little and hurt themselves. I remember when my eldest started walking properly and fell face first onto the floor. Her tooth went into her lip. There was so much blood. I cried, she cried. It was horrid.

blinks · 23/01/2011 23:30

bypass NHS Direct and go to A&E asap.

hogshead · 23/01/2011 23:32

He's not really drowsy well no more than if he was usually woken up in the night! When we cleaned him up he was awake, moving everything appropriately, cried when I tried to clean his face as usual.

Bit more settled now.

I think I'd head to A&E as well tbh. Don't want to worry you, but I really would go.

Stillchuckingit · 23/01/2011 23:38

Would still strongly advise taking him to A&E

I know you probably don't want to cause him more distress by taking him out but better safe than sorry!

I've got to go to bed now (early start tomorrow) but hope you and your ds are OK and all works out well.

A&E now if it was me. And I say that knowing I'd have to drag 3 other sleeping children from their beds to do so.

hogshead · 23/01/2011 23:47

Ok thanks everyone for your advice. Will update tomorrow

You need to get him to A&E as it sounds like possible concussion. Please don't delay. I am training in first aid and anyone that vomits after a head injury needs checking out especially after a nosebleed as well.

hogshead · 24/01/2011 00:58

Yes we are in a and e.
Ds vomited again which kinda sealed it. Just waiting now

Aww, am both relieved and worried for you. I hope all checks are clear and that we and you have all worried over nothing I really do.

Thinking of you.

blinks · 24/01/2011 01:49

phew.

he's in the best place, i really hope he's ok.

Stillchuckingit · 24/01/2011 08:03

How is your ds this morning Hogshead?

Hope you are both OK.

hogshead · 24/01/2011 18:23

Hello a quick update

We were admitted from a and e last night and checked out and monitored neurologically which was coming back normal although the vomiting continued.

Ds then developed really bad diaherra poor chap so they kept us in today just to make sure it was a bug and nothing more serious. Seems it was a true coincidence alongside the facial injury but the paediatrician was adamant it was the right thing to attend a and e given the state of ds's face

We are back home now and ds is brighter and more like himself so it is an early night for us both

Thank you for reassuring me that we weren't over reacting and god bless Mumsnet! (bit delirious through lack if sleep but you know what I mean!)
