She is well, and loves school, would it be a bad or good idea to send her to school tommorow??

She may be lucky and get a mild dose. DD had it a couple of weeks back. She had about 20 spots altogether, one night of bad itchiness and then she was fine. All in all she was out of action for just over a week by which time a lot of the spots were pretty much gone and the rest were well crusted. We were very very lucky with it.

If you want the 'official' advice on exclusion periods for various conditions (including chicken pox), the HPA advice is here

My 2 have just got over it - 5yr old only got 15 spots, 3yr old totally covered!! Used Virasoothe gel, specifically for chicken pox, although quite pricey, & found it much better than calamine. Was also recommended the Aveeno bath stuff, because of the oatmeal in it, & not sure if just a coincidence, but the spots seemed to improve really quickly after using that in their baths. School were happy for older one to go back as soon as ALL spots dry, as infectious from the oozy discharge from the blisters.
Hope this makes sense, & she's better soon.

I dont mind her being off at all, im sorry if thats how i came across Sad id never feel that way, if she needs to stay at home then of course i'll keep her off! I would never take a risk with anyones health, thats why i came on here to ask. I'll keep a close eye on the spots and try all those things if she gets uncomfortable, thankyou.

Another here recommending Eurax - I got this and calamine when DS (5 or 6 at the time) got CP. He hated the effect of calamine (me too when I came out in spots 2 weeks later.) She may not appear very ill TBH - DS was off colour- slight temp and cold symptoms for 2 days before the spots started to appear. He was then 'fine' apart from the spots and the fact we had to stay in/away from other people for 10 days. Get lots of craft/baking kits and DVDs. Good luck and hope DD has a mild dose!

Don't send her to school until after the pox have crusted over.

(what are you thinking?)

Charlotte,
I agree you asked for advice and where shot down in flames by some know it all mothers who obviously get EVERYTHING right with their kids! Way to go ladies, what a good example of how to make a mum feel bad.... Idiots.
Charlotte there is much misleading info on co I was told for example that it's before the spots appear that it's contagious, this is of course incorrect. Unless Any of these lot are gp's I wouldn't give two hoots anout their opinion. Speak to your gp I'm sure he/she won't be so critical.

Take care.

WTF?!?!?! NOOOO!!!

Bumperlicious · 14/03/2011 08:47

Clearly the op didn't know, that's why she asked so no need for the sarcastic responses.

Op it starts with just a few spots then before you know it they are covered!

I recommend baths with bicarb and oats wrapped in a muslin, Poxclin is expensive (£10) but great and not messy at all. Lots of tv and treats to distract from the itching and plenty of piriton and ibuprofen for the swelling.

she's probably over it now given the last post was nearly 2 months ago!!
