Hi, do any of your children take the tablets Montelukast for their asthma? Just been given it today after a weekend in a&e.

Has a breathing episode in August last year, needed 12 hours of nebs and oxygen then, this time only 7 hours. And nothing inbetween. Sorry DS2 is 4 at the end of Jan.

BUT.....

Peadiatric respiritory consultant says he thinks he does not have asthma but a 'viral induced wheeze' and the tablets with blue ventolin are to help stop these type of episodes.

We are going back in March for a consultant appointment.

Am knackered and confused about it all, DS2 very tired but has bounced back.

Any info much welcome.c

My DD used to take them (starting at about 4) - they were very effective for dealing with her bad night coughs, in particular. She had to come off them in the end because she was having regular severe nightmares.

Probably not a common side effect, but bear it in mind if his sleep is disturbed, in which case don't stop him taking them, but speak to the doctor.

We were in every 2 weeks with viral induced wheeze/ bronchiolitis. Monteleukast has seriously changed our lives. Not one admission since starting it despite numerous colds. My son is 1 btw.

my son has viral induced asthma - the problem is that all of the medicines such as seritide and montelukast are preventers and take a period of time to get in the system and work - if you waited until the virus hit it would be too late iyswim. The aim is to not have to use the blue inhaler as that is to help with an attack.

For example in the summer we can drop down to 1 puff of preventer morn and eve then in august we have to up it to 2 puffs morn and eve ready to catch him before the weather turns - made the mistake of doing it too late one year and he was in hospital for four days poor thing.

Montelekast is brilliant but it can have some funny side effects so keep an eye out.
