What could be wrong with my DS?

My DS is 18 months old and has never really been ill. Last Tuesday and Wednesday we went to view a couple of Nurseries and he spent time playing in the play rooms. Anyway last Thursday he had a temperature of 38.8 and was off his food for 3 days. There were no outward signs of him being ill and after 3 days and a few doses of Junior Nurofen he perked up and seemed fine again.

Last night he woke up crying and was very hot, Temperature was 38.9. We took him to GP following afternoon, but she could see nothing wrong, said he must have picked up a Virus and suggested the usual, keeping him cool, checking temp and administering Calpol etc. He still has a high temp, but doesn't seem ill in himself.

Has anyone experienced this recently with there Little Ones?

If DS is going to start nursery soon it would be worth stocking up on various medicines, dioralyte, nurofen, vicks etc as they do tend to have lots of illnesses when first starting nursery. Unfortunately its the time of year when all the viruses run riot!

Thank you, it is rather worrying. Today we've been giving him Calpol but his temperature isn't coming down much. He isn't eating but fortunately still taking fluids regularly. Poor little thing.

calpol doesnt work very well on my dd she had simular illness last week.
Ibruprofen is much better at bringing down a temp.
Hope he is better soon Smile

Can give both brufen and calpol together. In my more cynical moments I believe that the next biological weapon will originate in my childrens nursery.

I have never been so ill in my life as I was with Decembers "gift"....

Ibuprofen/Calprofen has been shown to be better at reducing temperature than paracetamol/Calpol and has the advantage of being a smaller dose so easier to administer. But alternating them is a good idea too.

DS has had a couple of high temps with no real follow-up - but the one where he was awake from 2am and complaining of tummyache etc. was a doozy - some kind of adenovirus, got all of us, bloody hell on wheels for a week. Still don't know where he picked it up!

Rempy: although brufen is the same family as neurofen, it's stronger and is prescription only in UK.

I don't think you there would be any problem to give paracetamol as well, burr recommend you check with the doctor who prescribed it - especially for a child, as pain/illness breaking through a prescription drug may in itself be significant.

rempy was it swine flu over christmas - my grown up DD had it and she was begging me to contact Dignitas in Switzerland it was so bad!! It seemed to peak then (me...vaccinated!!)

Piggyleroux · 23/01/2011 11:11

Exact same thing happened to my ds ten months before Xmas. Temp of 40 for three days but no other symptoms. Dh who is a doctor thought it may be swine flu but who knows?

Bobbiesmum · 23/01/2011 18:31

Brufen and ibuprofen and neurofen are exactly the same thing. You do not need a prescription.

onimolap · 23/01/2011 18:58

It's the same drug, but brufen is a much higher dose. The 200s can be had OTC now, but other versions are still prescription only. If there is breakthrough from strong analgesia, it would be sensible to see GP.

Bobbiesmum · 23/01/2011 19:33

Don't want to start an argument here but I am a doctor and prescribe this on a daily basis. Brufen is simply short for ibuprofen which is the generic name of the drug. Neurofen or calprofen ( amongst others) are the BRAND names and the dosage depends on age/weight.

onimolap · 23/01/2011 19:39

I think we're agreeing with each other, actually!

Oh ok, am very very very tired. Sorry
